History of the 13th Mississippi C.S.A.



 
            The Thirteenth Mississippi Infantry was organized at Corinth Mississippi during May 1861.It was mustered into Confederate service there on the 23rd May.The unit was quite large,containing slightly less than twelve hundred officers and enlisted men when mustered into service.The unit was re-organized at Yorktown,Virginia on the 26th April 1862.At the time the companies were relettered in the order of of the date of organization.

            Like almost all Civil War units the Thirteenth Mississippi Infantry was frequently known by an alternate designation derived from the name of its commanding officer.Like the names below:-

         The regiment's original commanding officer,William Barksdale was promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General from the 12th April 1862.He led his brigade with distinction thereafter,particularly at Fredricksburg,Virginia in December 1862.Barksdale was mortally wounded at Gettysburg,Pennsylvania on the 2nd July 1863,and he died the following day.
Soon after being mustered into Confederate service the Thirteenth Infantry was ordered to Virginia.There it joined the Army of the Potomac.In late 1861 the regiment was reported in the Department of Northern Virginia.The troops in this command were subsequently absorbed by the Army of North Virginia.The regiment served in that Army until the summer of 1863.As part of Longstreet's Corps the unit was moved west where it served in the Army of Tennessee and in the Department of East Tennessee.In the mid-summer of 1864 the unit joined the Army of the Valley District.It served in that Army until December 1864.The regiment then returned to service in the Army of North Virginia,serving in that Army for the remainder of the war.The list below identifies the specific higher command assignments of the unit.
