Martina helped Jana to a singles and doubles sweep, by holding her nerve to defeat Lindsay Davenport and Natasha Zvereva, the #2 seeds 6-3 3-6 8-6. In a match which started very light-heartedly, Martina and Jana played some great tennis to go 5-0 up in the first set, but the second seeds showed their character by fighting back. They traded breaks of serve in the final set, but Martina just came up with cracking shots at the right time including some blistering backhand returns to take the doubles title as a consolation for failing to retain her singles title. This title means that Martina is on course for a doubles Grand Slam, as she has won the Australian Open, (with Mirjana Lucic) and the French Open also with Jana.

The No. 1 court crowd gave a standing ovation to Martina and the newly crowned Wimbledon Ladies Champion, Jana Novotna as they entered the court for their semi final match against the #7 seeds, Lisa Raymond and Renae Stubbs. The crowd were able to see them fooling around and most off all enjoying themselves as they cruised to a straight sets 6-2 6-3 win. They will now play Lindsay Davenport and Natasha Zvereva, the #2 seeds, in a rematch of the French Open final about a month ago.

Martina lost in her bid to defend her title, when she lost to Jana Novotna today in the semi final. Martina was not in as good form this year as she was when she won the final last year against Jana. Jana defeated her doubles partner 6-4 6-4, and will face Nathalie Tauziat of France.
Martina showed the world what a sportswoman she is when she went out on court 1 to play a quarter final doubles match with her conquerer, Jana later on in the evening. They defeated Els Callens of Belgium and Julie Halard-Decugis of France 6-1 6-4 and will face the winner of the match between Sanchez Vicario/Sukova and Raymond/Stubbs in the semi-finals.

Martina marched into the semifinals with a tough three setter against Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Martina eventually prevailed 6-3 3-6 6-3. She will face her doubles partner, Jana Novotna in the next round tomorrow for a place in the finals. This match possibly being the decider for who will win the title (in my opinion!)
Martina and Jana, her opponent in the singles semis on Thursday, were both on court again today. They moved into the 4th round by beating the Japanese pairing of Naoko Kijimuta and Nana Miyagi, the #11 seeds, 6-3 6-4.
