WELL DONE MARTINA!

Saturday 5th July 1997

Martina beat Jana Novotna today in three sets, 2-6 6-3 6-3 to become the 1997 Wimbledon Ladies Singles Champion. After a scarey start when Martina was 4-0 down in the first set in a matter of minutes, Martina lost the set 6-2 in just 22 minutes! Martina took the second set 6-3 in 40 minutes. But then Martina lost her serve in the third set to trail 0-2. However, Martina regained her composure and won the next five games to lead 5-2. Serving for the match, Martina was broken again, but Martina broke straight back to win the final set 6-3.
Martina and her mixed doubles partner won their third round match, but lost in the quarter finals. Martina didn't leave the courts to celebrate her singles win until 9:11 p.m after her third match of the day!

Martina defeated Anna Kournikova in straight sets 6-3 6-2 to set up a final with Jana Novotna. A difficult opponent who crushed Arantxa in the semis. I hope Martina can beat her and also gain revenge for Arantxa! Martina also beat the number 2 seeds with J de Jager 6-4 0-6 10-8. Another very long doubles match. I hope this time Martina still has enough energy left for the final!

Martina beat Chladkova easily today in straight set 6-3 6-2 to set up a semi-final clash with Anna Kournikova (RUS). This should be an interesting match, but Martina will win it easily. I men, she hasn't dropped a single set yet, has she? Martina and Arantxa finsihed their match against Rubin/Schultz-McCarthy and eventually beat them 7-6 6-7 13-11. Martina is also partnering J de Jager of South Africa in the mixed doubles. They are unseeded and defeated P Hand & V Lake (GBR) in straight sets 6-1 6-3. Their next opponent will be the number 2 seeds P Galbraith & L Raymond (USA). A tough match for them!

Martina beat Anne Kremer of Luxembourg, who is number 218 in the world, in straight sets today, 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour 33 minutes. It was not an easy match for Martina, and not having any match play on grass beforehand did not help, but Martina pulled through in the end. Martina's opponent in round 2 will be Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus, who is currently number 80 in the world.

The draw has been made for Wimbledon '97 at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club today. I cannot tell you much about Martina's opponent for the first round, because she will be a qualfier. It should be good news as far as the rankings are concerned (Martina is No. 1, the qualifier is probably No. 100-something!), but Martina will not have had any match practice on grass since she did not compete at Birminghan last week or Eastbourne this week, but the qualifier will have played a few matches (and won!) to qualify for the Championships. Martina claims that she will not arrive in England until Friday, three days before play is due to start! Martina's potential opponents could be either No. 14 seed Brenda Schultz-McCarthy or Jennifer Capriati in the fourth round, No. 5 seed Lindasy Davenport in the quarter-finals or Iva Majoli in the semi-final, if Iva is to get that far, as she has not yet won a singles match there before! This could be a chance for Martina to gain her revenge over Iva for beating her in the French Open final 10 days ago!

The doubles draw has also been made, and Martina/Arantxa , who are the numer 2 seeds, have been drawn up against Martincova/Vildova. Has anyone heard of them before? I haven't, so I guess it should be an easy match for Martina and Arantxa!

Monday 16th June 1997

Martina is going to be the number 1 seed at Wimbledon this year, since Steffi Graf has pulled out.
Quick News: Steffi is considering retirement, she told a German newspaper a few days ago.

Wednesday 11th June 1997

The dream final between Steffi and Martina will have to be postponed until after Wimbledon, because Steffi has pulled out of Wimbledon due to another operation on her knee. She has been told to take 4-6 months off, which would mean missing Wimbledon. This means that Martina has a great chance of winning as this is the tournament where Martina was knocked out by Steffi for the previous consecutive two years.
