Martina claimed her 9th WTA Tour title this year by defeating Monica Seles 7-6 (7-4) 6-4, in the Toshiba Tennis Classic today. Martina won her fourth doubles title of the year by partnering Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to defeat Amy Frazier and Kimberly Po 6-3 7-5.

Saturday 2nd August 1997
Martina defeated Mary Pierce in straight sets today 6-0 6-2. Martina and Arantxa defeated Katrina Adams and Debbie Graham (US) 6-4 6-2 today for a place in the finals, where they will play Amy Frazier and Kimberly Po (US).

Friday 1st August 1997
Martina defeated Conchita Martinez again 6-4 6-4, in the quarter finals of the Toshiba Tennis Classic today.

Thursday 31st July 1997
Martina and Arantxa defeated Caroline Vis and Yakuk Basuki 6-3 6-3 during a second round match.

Wednesday 30th July 1997
Martina trounced Venus Williams 6-2 6-1 in only 50 minutes today. This was Martina's first match as she had recieved a bye for the first round. Martina will play either Helena Sukova, Martina's ex-doubles partner with whom she won the Ladies doubles at Wimbledon last year, or Conchita Martinez, whom she destroyed in the final of the Bank of the West Classic last week.

Tuesday 29th July 1997
Martina partnered Arantxa Sanchez Vicario again to be the number two seeds behind Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva. They won their first round match comfortably against Naoko Kijimuta & Nana Miyagi (JAP) in straight sets 6-2 6-1. Venus Williams won her first round match, so Martina will play her in round two.

Monday 28th July 1997
Martina will be playing at the Toshiba Tennis Classic this week in San Diego, California, USA. Martina is the top seed (as usual now that that she is world number 1!), and she gets a bye to the second round. On Wednesday, Martina will either play Venus Williams (USA), the 17 year old many people say could be a potential challenge for Martina's throne at the top of the WTA, or Florencia Labat (ARG), who she beat a couple of weeks ago when playing for Switzerland in the Fed Cup.
