Tuesday 14th January 1998

Martina suffered an enormous upset to Venus Williams in three tough sets. Venus had cramps towards the latter stages of the match, but eventually ground out a 3-6 6-4 7-5 win.

Monday 13th January 1998

The Sydney International begins today. Martina will defend her title and hopefully begin the year on a high note like she did last season. Being the #1 seed, Martina recieves a bye for the first round, and will play Venus Williams in tomorrow's second round match.
