CJRL Awards and Dubious Distinctions

THE CHICO WALKER MEMORIAL TROPHY This is what it's all about. The "thrill of victory" is embodied by the granddaddy of all Rotisserie League awards, the Chico Walker Memorial Trophy. The trophy is awarded to the first place CJRL team each year. An engraved plaque bearing the name of the league champion and the year of victory is attached to the trophy, and the winning team keeps the trophy for the entire year until a new champion is crowned. Although the trophy is given to the champion soon after the final standings are calculated and checked, the official presentation takes place at the following season's Auction Draft. The previous year's champion says a few words about the new champion, and then gives it up. |
THE "BOOBY PRIZE" HAT
What the Chico Walker Memorial Trophy is to the "thrill of victory",
the "Booby Prize" hat is to the "agony of defeat".
Each season, the team unlucky enough to find themself in last place must
wear the "Booby Prize" hat (also known as the "Boob Hat")
during the following season's Auction Draft. Yes, it is cruel and unusual
punishment, but somebody's got to do it!
Enacted in time for the 1994 season, so far only the Knuckle Knockers (then
known as Gig's Rubberneckers) has worn the hat. This was during the 1995
Auction Draft. Prior to the 1996 Auction Draft, the specter of wearing
the hat was so great that some say it drove that year's last place team,
the Flying Elvis's, to give up Rotisserie Baseball forever. The hat was
also not worn during the 1997 Auction Draft due to a loophole in the CJRL
Rules. The rule states that if a team that is in it's first season with
the CJRL and finishes in last place, that team has the option of not wearing
the "Booby Prize" hat. The last place team in 1996, the Peacekeepers,
opted not to wear the hat (and who can blame them?).
