THIS IS RAOTL's GUIDE TO ANFIELD ... |
|
Stanley Park & car park is off the photo to the bottom of the picture (see graphic below) behind Anfield Road. The club ticket office and merchandising superstore - 'Liverworld' - are both at the rear of 'The Kop' on Walton Breck Road. The museum/visitor's centre is also to be found at the rear of The Kop, as is the 'Bill Shankly' statue. There is a programme shop / development association office in the Main Stand car-park by The Shankly Gates. The ISC ofice is currently housed here. The Shankly Gates are next to the Hillsborough Memorial on Anfield road. |
Anfield Road, Liverpool |
How to get there
Anfield is situated 2 miles north of Liverpool city centre. Bus route 26 runs along Walton Breck Road and there is a bus stop outside the Kop. Board this bus at the Paradise Street Bus Station. On match days these buses run regularly at 6 or 7 minute intervals. From Paradise St there are bus stops on the route through Dale St and Tithebarn Street then onto Scotland Road. Timetables are on most (all?) bus-stops. The fare is about 80p on a Saturday. (The return bus into the city is number 27).
By rail, join the Merseyrail underground at Central Station or Moorfields and take the Northern line service towards Southport. Alight at Kirkdale, which is still well over a mile from the ground. There is taxi rank nearby Kirkdale Station on Hawthorne Road. Walking to Anfield will take 20-30 minutes, depending on how late you are! But at least you'll pass a few pubs on the way.
By car, from the city centre take the A59 (signposted Ormskirk, Preston or M58) past John Moores University and the Wallasey Tunnel and continue past two major junctions. Take the right-hand fork up Everton Valley (Anfield is clearly signposted). Anfield Road is closed to traffic on matchdays and so to park in the large car-park next to the Vernon Sangster Sports Centre in Stanley Park you must drive either...
![]()
(a) Around Stanley Park towards Goodison up Walton Lane. At the traffic lights at the junction with Queens Drive (A5058 Ring Road) turn right. At the next major junction turn right again onto Utting Ave. Continue up the hill towards Anfield and at the traffic lights on the junction with Priory Rd, turn right again. The car-park entrance is a hundred yards up on the left. The car-park is actually adjacent to Anfield Road and just five minutes walk from the ground. If approaching from the M62 you can follow the A5058 (Queens Drive) ring road at the end of the motorway - follow signs for Bootle. Continue to the junction with Utting Avenue. Follow the 'Football Car Park' signs to the Stanley Park car-park. (b) A lot easier: Take a right turn onto Walton Breck Road from Everton Valley (at Notre Dame High School). The roof of The Kop is clealry visible ahead. Continue along Walton Breck Road past the rear of The Kop and take the next left just before the petrol station, then the next left again. This brings you out on Anfield Road adjacent to The Arkles pub. Turn left then right at the corner of the Park onto Arkles Lane. Travel down the hill and take the next left onto Priory Road. The car-park entrance is a hundred yards up on the left. PLEASE NOTE: There is NO access to Priory Road from Walton Lane on matchdays.
By taxi: from the city centre should cost around £4.00 The best bet for 4 sharing.

Availabilty
Ticket Office hours are 9.15 am to 4.45 pm. So if you work you've no bleeding chance of getting there - nice one. It's closed on a Saturday if there is NO home game. Nice one again.
On a match-day it's open from 9.15 am til kick-off and then for just 15 mins after the end of the game. (24 hr info line is 0151 260 9999).
Postal applicants - tickets available 26 days in advance. Applications should clearly state which match they require and must include an s.a.e. and correct remittance. Cheques and postal orders payable to 'Liverpool Football Club'. If you pay by credit card then include details of card number and expiry date. Postals to ... LFC Ticket Office, PO Box 204, LIVERPOOL L69 4PQ, Merseyside.
By telephone - Again, 26 days in advance etc. quote your credit card number and expiry date. There is a minimum booking fee of 50 pence per ticket. Tickets can be collected from the credit card collections window at the ticket office (behind the Kop). BRING YOUR CARD in case they want to see it when you collect the tickets. Phone number is 0151 263 5727.
Personal application - Turn up 19 days before the match and ask nicely.
Touts - not nice I know but sometimes you're just stuck. Tend to congregate outside The Albert pub at the back of The Kop, and on the pavement by the entrance to The Centenary car park at 'flagpole corner'. If you stand around looking 'lost' they'll usually approach you and ask if you're looking for tickets. Usually pay around £30 max. for 'normal' games and for big games in excess of £120. BE WARNED - touting is illegal although buying the tickets is not. The police will, however, confiscate the tickets if they feel narky. If offered a ticket PLEASE check it's genuine!! Ask to see a real ticket from someone outside so that you know what they look like (check the back of the ticket too). If offered a season ticket voucher - check the voucher number with a steward and also check the season 'year' at the top of the ticket ... it's sounds daft, but many have been stung buying last year's voucher for 'match no. 15'. It's usually the tourists that get ripped off this way. Also ensure you know for which row and seat the season ticket voucher is for as it's not printed on the individual vouchers.
There's been a crackdown recently on touts (Dec. 98) and particularly on the whining youngsters bumming spare vouchers off the unsuspecting.
One fairly safe method is asking the fanzine sellers - they may be able to point you to someone other than a professional tout who has a spare ticket. Good luck.

Museum & Vistors Centre
Entrance next to 'LiverWorld' at the Kop end of Anfield on Walton Breck Road. Note the Bill Shankly tribute statue outside the entrance which is a fine tribute to the great man, even if the inscription is a tad trite. The museum will be upgraded and expanded to double it's current size in 1999. A new café will also be built on the first floor.
I've had a brief look inside - there's a great display of shirts through the years but for a club of our success there should be a greater display of trophies. You get no overall sense of the club's achievements. As for the 'stadium' tour - disappointing, and the guide we had was less than professional.
Costs: Visitors Centre only. £5.00 (adult) £3.00 (kids, seniors) £13.00 (Family - 2 adults & 2 kids) . Visitor Centre and Stadium Tour: £8.00 (adult) £5.00 (kids etc) £20.00 (Family)
Open: Matchdays 9.00 am til 2hrs before kick-off. Other Days: 10.00am - 5.00 pm (last admission 4.00pm)
Closed on Thursdays from October - March.
Accommodation & Liverpool Hotels
Aachen Hotel. 89-91 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool. (0151 709 7200) Small hotel in the city centre. Prices £25 -£35). Lots of Liverpool fans stay here.
Feathers Hotel: 117-125 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool (0151 709 9655) Bigger and better than the Aachen and slightly more expensive. Very good value.
There are also several large hotels (Moat House, Atlantic Tower, Adelphi) which are more expensive but which are still good value. The Moat House is where a lot of Scandanavian fans stay when they come to Liverpool, and is also a favoured watering hole of some of the players. It's also very central for the Cavern Quarter and Wood St/Seel St. Several new hotels have recently been completed, including a four star Swallow Inn (excellent but pricey) in the city centre, and a Crown Plaza opposite the Atlantic Tower at the Pier Head on the riverfront. There is also a Hotel Ibis at the Albert Dock, and Holiday Inns are also building one of their 'economy' hotels at the dock.
Britannia Adelphi Hotel: Ranleigh Place at the end of Lime Street. 5 minute walk from Lime St Station. (0151 - 709 7200). £35-£70 per night. "Just kewk, will yer!"
YMCA: 56 Mount Pleasant (0151 709 9516). Usual YMCA standard of cleanliness and comfort. Very central. From £12.50 per night.
Highland Home 'Hotel'. Dock Road near Harry Ramsdens. Very basic B&B but cheap - £15 per peron. Converted pub and looks it. Don't take a bird there unless you've booked her by the half-hour. Stable mate of the Jamaica House Hotel on Dale Street (similar price).
There are also a lot of small bed & breakfast (B&B) 'hotels' behind Lime Street Station and a YWCA hostel in the city centre. Out of town try staying in Southport (30 mins on the Northern Line train service) or in one of the many smaller hotels and b&bs around Sefton Park and Lark Lane in Aigburth.
There is also a B&B called 'Tina's' which is in Anfield Road opposite the Centenary Stand.
