The Index System

The Index System of rating horses competing at the distance of six furlongs is the basis for all the figures produced at NJ THORONET. We examine only six furlong races when we make our figures and examine the performance of horses coming from these races in subsequent starts. By breaking down each six furlong race into three, two furlong splits, we are able to analyze both speed and pace in combination for a week, a day, a race and for an individual horse within a race. The Moving Cumulative Average (MCA) is the standard used to create the Daily Variant, Class Pars, Index Races (races run below the MCA at all points) and Index Horses (horses which have run below the MCA at all points.)

Approximately 23% - 26% of all six furlong races qualify as Index Races. From these Index Races we identify certain horses who run favorable patterns - terming them "Index Horses." When a horse has run a favorable pattern in an Index Race, it enters a four race "window of opportunity." By following certain strategic maneuvers associated with the various running patterns (class and distance manipulations), the horse's chances for a successful performance within the four race window of opportunity are greatly enhanced.

HOW TO READ THE INDEX DATA

Data on Six Furlong races will be presented in the following format:

Date Race Conditions Tot +/- CP Index

05/24 01 3U5 2 +2

Date, Race and Conditions are self explanatory. Tot refers to the race rating, in this case "2". +/- CP indicates if the race was above or below the par for the class of race, in this case +2 indicates that the race was run 2 points slower than class par. If a "Y" appears under "Index", then the race was determined to be an Index Race, one which all points were run under the MCA.

We'll have much more on the Index System once the meet begins.
