First of all, I apologize to anyone who's been looking for new content here. Since moving from Pittsburgh to North Carolina last September, my professional and personal life have been - to put it mildly, extremely hectic. I now have a fiancee, Paula, who requires some (ok, lots) of my attention, and moved from a contract position to a permanent position with GlaxoWellcome as a validation specialist for their laboratory automation systems. These have "really" kept me hopping!! Anyway, this is a baseball page, so enough about me.
I'm a dedicated fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, almost since I was born (my mother tells me that at age 3 I was poring over the baseball stats in the paper). I help administer administrator for the Pirates' E-mail list (click here for subscription information). After moving to Maryland in 1982, I became a fan of the Baltimore Orioles, a team that I'd enjoyed watching even as the Buccos beat them in '71 and '79 :)
I've been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) since September 1996. Through SABR, I've met a lot of people who are doing research along parallel lines to some of my own interests (and most of them have more time to devote to it than I do - sometimes I wonder how they do it!!). Furthermore, the SABR members are usually more than willing - and eager - to offer peer review and criticism, which is essential in any serious research activity. My SABR membership is one of the best investments I've ever made.
This page hosts the data which I've collected in the course of my baseball research, as well as some links to other baseball sites of interest. It's a quick-and-dirty effort to get some info on the Web, so it's mostly text with tables (no pretty graphics, sorry!!), and is very much a work in progress. If you have comments or questions, or if any of the links on this page do not work, please E-mail me.

Situational Offense: How do teams/players perform, on average, in various base/out situations?? Last updated 7/23/98. Complete data for 1997, all AL data for 1996, and summary and partial team data for NL 1996 is available.
Bequeathed Runners: The opposite of *inherited runners*; how are pitchers' ERAs affected by runners which their bullpens allow to score?? '96 and '97 complete and available.
Run Scoring Patterns: Is it better to adopt a strategy which maximizes the total number of runs that you score, or is it better to adopt a strategy which maximizes the frequency with which you score runs, even if you score fewer runs overall?? TBD
Bill Mazeroski: I've done an analysis of Maz's HOF credentials; an overview of that analysis is included on this page. NEW!! 7/14/98 (PDF link added 7/15/98). REVISED 7/22/98.
Pie Traynor: I've done a similar analysis for Pie Traynor's career, with the summary here. Last updated 3/23/98.
Glenn's Pittsburgh Pirates Page: A must stop for Bucco fans. Glenn Gearhard has put together the most extensive collection of Bucco-related information anywhere on the Web.
Caleb's Pittsburgh Pirates Page: Caleb Cohen provides a number of statistical reports on the Bucs' performance, broken down in a variety of ways.
Cecil Greek's Pirates Page: Want pictures of your favorite Bucco?? Check here. Dr. Cecil Greek has some goodies.
Matthew Blair's Pirates Page: Matt has a page dedicated to Roberto Clemente, and another dedicated to the 1979 Pirates.
Black and Gold Autographed Sports Memorabilia: This site is a one-stop shopping site specializing in memorabilia from Pittsburgh sports stars.
Pittsburgh Pirates Web Ring: Visit pages by other Bucco fans.
David's Unofficial O's Page: Transaction summaries, links to Oriole articles on the Web, info on ex-Orioles, stats...a comprehensive look at the Orioles on a day-by-day basis. Owned and operated by David and Jeremy Nieporent.
Orioles' Hangout: This site has a comprehensive look at Orioles' minor leaguers, plus analysis and commentary on the team and a chat area.
There are also good fan pages dedicated to Cal Ripken, Jr. and Mike Mussina.
Prospects, Projects, and Suspects: Daniel Levine's analysis of minor leaguers. The best site on the Web for minor league prospect info.
Baseball Prospectus: These guys have been ground-breakers in developing new analytical techniques (Clay Davenport's DTs, for example). If you can focus on that and ignore the holier-than-thou attitude and repetitive media bashing of some of their writers, there's lots of useful info here.
Big Bad Baseball Analyst: The best of the baseball preseason annuals with an analytical viewpoint, in my opinion, because they aren't afraid to admit that they don't have all of the answers - and they're willing to revisit the answers that they think they already have.
High Boskage House: An informative analytical site, with lots of background as to exactly *how* their performance measures for players are derived.
John Skilton's Baseball Links: A comprehensive list of baseball links on the Web.
Total Baseball: From the folks who brought you the books, comes the Web Site. It used to have a better search engine than it does now, which would allow you to look up players both individually and by team/season, but it still has a complete and comprehensive historical data base. Bring back the team roster searches, fellows!!
Baseball Think Factory: Maintained by Jim Furtado, it's "dedicated to the thoughtful analysis of baseball, both real and imagined". One nice feature is the "scholars" section, with papers by Jim, Dan Szymborski, and Tom Ruane.
