Dennis Alexander Center 6-5, 315, Memphis, Tennessee (Westwood) Alexander helped Westwood to an 8-2 record his senior season, including a 20-6 win over eventual 6A state champ Melrose. He was named a Border Wars Third-team All-South selection. The loss was the only defeat suffered by Melrose in the 1998 season. An outstanding offensive line prospect, Dennis made great strides at his position between his junior and senior season. He played both offense and defense at Westwood High School, grading 95 percent as an offensive lineman, while making 65 tackles and 11 sacks on defense. Alexander was a three-year starter. He has excellent strength with a 395-pound bench press and 550-pound squat. Alexander also played basketball as a sophomore and junior. He played for coach Magellan Askew at Westwood. Santonio Beard Runningback 6-1, 205, Nashville, Tennessee (Pearl-Cohn) Santonio enrolled at Millford Prep School (Connecticut) in January. He was named a SuperPrep All-America following his senior season and was a two-time Mr. Football in Class 4A in Tennessee. Beard was a second-team All-South pick by Forrest Davis. He rushed for 5,630 and 91 touchdowns during his prep career. As a prep senior, Beard rushed for 2,432 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was named Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Clinic Bowl in 1996 and 1997 after leading the Firebirds to back-to-back state titles. Pearl-Cohn lost in the state quarterfinals to Whites Creek his senior season. For the past two seasons, Beard was named a first-team All-State player by AP. He was a runaway winner for Metro and City MVP honors. As a junior, he rushed for 2,234 yards and 25 touchdowns while averaging just 11 carries a game. He added another 175 yards and five TDs as a receiver and returned three kickoffs for TDs and had six interceptions on defense. Hirchel Bolden Defensive Back 5-11, 190, Dothan, Alabama (Dothan) Hirschel was tabbed a SuperPrep All-America following his senior season. One of the state's most talented athletes, Hirschel played quarterback as a junior, but switched to tailback his senior year with 87 carries for 940 yards, a 10.8 yard-per-carry average. Bolden added 87 receptions for 940 yards. He is projected as a defensive back at Alabama. As a junior, he threw for over 1,000 yards with six TDs, had 1,350 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns. For his career, Bolden had over 4,000 yards total offense. An all-around athlete, Hirschel ran a 10.8, 100-meter dash and also ran the 200 and the 4x100 meter relay. Pigskin Preps rates him as the South's No. 2 "athlete". Coached by Jimmy Addison. He chose the Tide over Florida, Auburn and Florida State. Robert Branch Defensive Line 6-3, 305, Tuscaloosa, Alabama (Central) A one-man wrecking crew for coach Buzz Busby at Central, Branch projects as a defensive lineman in a 3-4 alignment or a shade tackle in a 4-3 set. A two-year starter, Branch had 111 tackles, with three sacks and tackles for losses. As a junior, he registered 97 tackles (49 solos), 12 sacks and a pair of blocked kicks. Ron Ingram, Birmingham News, Says: "Was at his best in big games. Named to the Birmingham News preseason Super Seniors list. Best position on defense in high school was noseguard." Antonio Carter Wide Receiver 5-9, 180, Tallahassee, Florida (Rickards) A SuperPrep National 50 and All-America selection, Antonio was chosen as SuperPrep's 19th best player in the nation and the sixth-best in talent-rich Florida. He is a versatile player who saw action at cornerback, running back, wide receiver, quarterback and kick returner in high school. He finished his senior year with five interceptions on defense, 37 receptions for 530 yards and 13 touchdowns and 850 yards rushing. Antonio also had two kickoff and one punt returns for touchdowns. On defense, he had foive interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. He also recovered two fumbles and recorded 42 tackles. In back-to-back games his senior season, Antonio rushed 19 times for 122 yards and then had eight receptions for 88 yards in the next game as a wide receiver. He started every game since his freshman season. He was a four-year varsity player and played six positions during his prep career. "A.C." turned in a hand-held time of 4.26 on a fast track at the Interactive Sports Network's Football Combine last summer. His brother, Tim, is a starting defensive back at Tulane. Gerard Clark Defensive Lineman 6-7, 255, Daytona Beach, Florida (Mainland) An excellent combination of size and speed, Gerard had an up-and-down senior season. The past two seasons, he combined for over 25 quarterback sacks. His senior season, Gerard had 87 tackles and 12 sacks and as a junior, had 12 sacks. Coached by John Maronto. Gerald Dixon Defensive Back 5-11, 185, Burtonsville, Maryland (Paint Branch) Although he played quarterback as a prep senior, Gerald will play the defensive back position for Alabama. As a quarterback, he passed for 1,236 yards and 14 TDs and had another 1,139 yards rushing, including a 97-yard TD run. He also returned punts, running three back (79, 85 and 90 yards) for touchdowns. As a defensive back, he had only two passes completed against him during his 11-game senior campaign and recorded 10 interceptions the past two seasons. The most receiving yards he gave up in a game was 20. As a junior, he competed in track and recorded Maryland's second-fastest time in the 100 meter dash last spring, a 10.35 clocking. Dixon played for coach Bob Windsor at Paint Branch. He chose Alabama over Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina and Florida. Dante Ellington Offensive Lineman 6-6, 298, Leighton, Alabama (Colbert County) Dante was a SuperPrep and Parade All-America and Birmingham News Super All-State pick following his senior year. He was a four-year, two-way starter for Colbert County, Dante is an agile and quick athlete. He is considered to be one of the best power blockers in the state, with excellent feet and explosive quickness off the ball. As a freshman he started at defensive tackle, but the past three years played left guard. Ellington's sophomore season, Colbert County was the Class 3A state champions and as a junior finished as the state's runner-up. Colbert County was 8-2 his senior year. He bench presses 325 and squats 495. Dante is the nephew of former Tide basketball great Leon Douglas. He played for coach Jimmy Moore at Colbert County. Alonzo Ephraim Offensive Lineman/Defensive Lineman 6-3, 280, Birmingham, Alabama (Wenonah) Alonzo was a SuperPrep All-America and Birmingham News Super All-State choice following his senior season. A high school center, Alonzo also played defense and would like to continue playing both ways in college. For the season, he graded 92 percent as an offensive lineman and had 102 tackles, 13 sacks and three caused fumbles on defense. As a junior, he had 47 tackles and 16 sacks. A four-year starter at Wenonah, Alonzo led his team in tackles as a senior after getting 42 tackles and 15 sacks as a junior. Alonzo set Wenonah's school record for the discus with a toss of 143 feet. He also played basketball and baseball. Off the field, he was a leader in the Wenonah community. He had a 3.5 GPA, was a member of the SGA, Peer Helpers, Beta Club, Academic Bowl Team and heads his church's "Bridge the Gap" youth department. Coached by Ronald Cheatham. Leonard Fulgham Wide Receiver 6-3, 185, Montevallo, Alabama (Montevallo) Primarily a wide receiver in high school, Leonard had 40 receptions for over 800 yards, averaged 20.7 yards per catch and had 16 TDs as a senior. While playing defense, Leonard had five interceptions. He also returned kicks, returning two for touchdowns after getting six as a junior. He played basketball for Montevallo and averaged 24.0 points per game as a junior. Coached by Eddie Williams. He selected the Tide over Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Mississippi State. Michael Gaines Tight End 6-3, 255, Tallahassee, Florida (Florida) Michael was named by several publications as the most athletic tight end in Florida. He played tight end, fullback and linebacker in high school. As a prep senior, he had 20 receptions for 535 yards and seven touchdowns. On defense, he turned in 110 tackles and one sack. Gaines was selectted to play in the Florida-Georgia All-Start game. He is first cousin to Antonio Carter Coached by Mike Hickman. Casey Gilbert Tight End 6-4, 270, Pascagoula, Mississippi (Pascagoula) A SuperPrep All-America, Casey played tight end and defensive end. Over the past two seasons, he had 24 receptions for 523 yards and four TDs on offense. As a defensive end, he had 40 solo tackles, 62 assists, six sacks, six fumble recoveries and knocked down four passes. As a junior, he had 100 tackles and six sacks. Coached by Jamie Kelly. Brandon Greer Wide Receiver 6-2, 195, Rainbow City, Alabama (Westbrook Christian) Greer was a Birmingham News Super All-State pick as a prep senior and he is noted for his excellent hands, Brandon had 70 receptions for 1,729 yards and 30 TDs his senior season. His 30 TD receptions broke Ozzie Newsome's 25-year-old mark of 23 TDs. He caught six TD passes in one game, another state mark and had one, 93-yarder. In one playoff game, he had four receptions for 88 yards and three touchdowns. In that same game, he also returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. As a junior, Greer had 52 receptions for 865 yards and 12 touchdowns, while getting 55 tackles and three interceptions from his safety spot on defense. For his career, Brandon had 151 receptions for 3,370 yards (32 yards shy of the state mark) and 51 touchdowns. As a free safety, he had seven career interceptions and 65 tackles this past season. Ray Hudson Defensive Back 5-10, 190, Bonifay, Florida (Holmes County) A talented athlete who can play either defensive back or running back, Hudson rushed for 1,160 yards and 16 touchdowns his senior season. In addition, he had 35 tackles, 21 pass break-ups and two interceptions. He returned one of those interceptions 93 yards for a touchdown. As a junior, he rushed for 2,029 yards and 24 touchdowns on 302 carries to average 6.72 yards per carry. He played for coach Tom Wheeler. Picked the Tide over Auburn and Georgia Tech.
Jarrett Johnson Defensive Lineman 6-4, 268, Chiefland, Florida (Chiefland) A SuperPrep All-America and Border Wars Third-Team All-South pick, Jarrett can play either defensive end or defensive tackle. He has excellent pass-rushing skills after finishing his high school career with more than 40 career sacks. As a junior, he helped lead his team to the 2A state championship game and earned second-team All-State honors. Johnson also earned second-team All-South honors from Forrest Davis. He had 97 tackles, 25 sacks and 31 tackles for losses as a junior. Coached by Sam Holland. He selected the Tide over Florida and Florida State. Charles Jones Defensive Back 6-1, 180, Waynesboro, Georgia (Burke County) A high school quarterback, Charles is projected as a defensive back for the Tide. While playing quarterback, he had 800 yards passing and five touchdowns, while getting 1,188 yards and 10 TDs rushing his senior season. His longest TD run was 93 yards. On defense, he had 80 tackles and four interceptions, returning one 91 yards for a TD. Jones helped his team to a 6-5 record. He was a three-sport letterman at Burke County and over the past two seasons, he had 12 interceptions. As a quarterback, he accounted for over 4,000 yards total offense. Charles is the former teammate of current Tide player Lanis Baxley. Coached by Mike Falleur. Jones chose the Tide over South Carolina. and Georgia Tech. Kenny King Defensive Lineman 6-4, 270, Daphne, Alabama (Daphne) The No. 7 player in Dixie by SuperPrep, a SuperPrep and Parade All-America and Birmingham News Super All-State pick, Kenny collected 120 tackles and 10 sacks, five fumble recoveries and five forced fumbles his senior season, despite being consistently double and triple-teamed. King was also named to Tom Lemming's First-Team All-America squad , a first-team pick to Forrest Davis' All-South squad and was a Border Wars All-South second-team choice. He helped Daphne High School to its best record in school history with a 10-2 mark. King was a two-time all-state pick for the Trojans while playing for coach Steve Savarese. As a junior, he had 130 tackles (70 solos) and also threw the shot put 57-feet to finish second in the state meet. Blessed with excellent speed, King has been timed at 4.7 and has a personal best of 425 in the bench press and routinely squats 600. He selected the Tide over Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. *Milo Lewis Defensive Back 6-0, 190, Mountain View, California (Community College of San Francisco) Lewis enrolled at Alabama in January and will participate in spring practice. A first-team Junior College All-America at CCSF, Lewis allowed just one touchdown and 10 receptions from his cornerback slot and helped his team to an 11-1 record. He had three interceptions and 55 tackles last season. His freshman season at CCSF, Lewis also had three interceptions while playing for coach George Rush. As a prep senior, Lewis was a running back and rushed for over 1,800 yards and 22 touchdowns. Lewis was a teammate of current Tide players Canary Knight and Miguel Merritt at CCSF. Lewis played his prep ball at Mountain View (Calif.) High School and turned in a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to earn MVP honors in the state high school all-star game. Matt Lomax Offensive Lineman 6-4, 296, Mobile, Alabama (UMS-Wright) Following his senior season, Matt was named a SuperPrep and Parade All-America and was selected to the Birmingham News Super All-State team. Matt was a Border Wars All-South first-team selection. As a two-way lineman at UMS-Wright, Matt graded 91 percent on the offensive side (including 36 pancake blocks) and had 31 tackles and four sacks on defense. Coached by Chris Nemith. He picked the Tide over Kentucky, Michigan, Auburn, Notre Dame and Clemson. Forrest Davis Says: "Matt is a first-team All-America offensive lineman with great ability. Roberto McBride Defensive Back 5-9, 165, Lakeland, Florida (Kathleen) Roberto played wide receiver, runningback and defensive back in high school, but will likely land as a defensive back at Alabama. He had eight interceptions as a junior and then had 500 yards rushing and eight TDs in four games as a senior. One of his biggest plays of the season was an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Coached by Dave Robson. He picked Alabama over Florida, Florida State, Iowa and Pittsburgh. Forrest Davis Says: "One of the two fastest players in the South. Can play several positions, but may be best as a cover corner. Dominating special teams player. An All-South team selection." Garry McNealy Defensive Lineman 6-4, 270, Perry, Florida (Taylor County) His senior season at Taylor County, Garry had 80 tackles and five sacks and Pigskin Preps rates McNealy among the South's top 10 defensive tackles. He was picked to Forrest Davis' All-South second team. As a junior, despite missing six games with injuries, Garry made 42 tackles, five sacks and caused two fumbles. Coached by Shaw Maddox. He chose the Tide over Florida, Clemson, Tulane, Georgia and Southern Miss. Forrest Davis Says: "Brutal pass rushing defensive end. Should help any team as a freshman. Brandon Miree Runningback 6-2, 228, Cincinnati, Ohio (Winton Woods) Miree had a sensational senior year, rushing for 2,455 yards and 31 touchdowns on 259 carries to help his team to a 9-2 record. Miree was ranked as the No 9 player in the Detroit Free Press Best of the Midwest team. He averaged 223.2 yards per game and 9.51 yards per carry while leading Winton Woods to its first-ever playoff appearance. As a junior, he had 1,343 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns on 130 carries. Miree has been clocked at 10.6 in the 100 meter dash. Brandon played for coach Lou Cynakar. He selected the Tide over Michigan State and Notre Dame. Josh Parker Quarterback 6-4, 205, Crawfordville, Florida (Wakulla) A pure drop-back passer, Josh threw for over 2,000 yards his sophomore season and then came back following a year layoff and threw for 1,700 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior. Parker earned All-Big Bend honors as a sophomore. He threw for over 3,000 yards and 21 TDs in his prep career. Coached by J.D. Jones. He chose the Tide over Syracuse, Florida, Florida State and Central Florida. Jamie Newberg, Border Wars,Says: "Did not play football his junior season. A good fit for both him and Alabama. Dave Peterson Linebacker 6-3, 230, Bristol, Florida (Liberty County) Peterson was a four-year starter at Liberty County. As a junior, Dave had 112 tackles and 8 sacks. Coached by Richard Kennedy. He selected the Tide over Florida, Florida State, Clemson, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Forrest Davis Says: "One of the South's top-ten true linebackers. Has great size. Should play the middle in college. An impact player." Barry Holland, Pigskin Preps, Says: "A dominating linebacker who can start as a freshman if his grades pan out. Saleem Rasheed Linebacker 6-3, 220, Birmingham, Alabama (Shades Valley) A SuperPrep National 50 and Parade All-America selection, SuperPrep's Dixie Defensive Player of the Year and a Birmingham News Super All-State selection, Saleem led his team in tackles for four years, while making first-team All-Metro teams for three straight years. He was also Alabama's Gatorade Player of the Year, a Border Wars and Forrest Davis First-Team All-South selection. In his four-year career, he never missed a game. Saleem was a leader in helping Shades Valley to a 12-2 record and the Class 6A semifinals his senior year. He had 157 tackles, 15 sacks and 45 stops behind the line and one fumble recovery his senior season. In three playoff games, he registered 47 tackles, seven sacks, and 17 tackles behind the line. As a junior, he had 142 tackles, six sacks, blocked a punt and a field goal. On offense, he had 604 yards rushing and 16 TDs. Brother Dawud was the state's Mr. Football in 1994 and now plays at Duke. Rasheed played for coach Robert Higginbotham. He picked the Tide over Georgia Tech, Florida, Notre Dame and Tennessee. Forrest Davis Says: "The fastest linebacker in the South. All-South team member. Jeremy Walker Fullback/Linebacker 6-3, 250, Prattville, Alabama (Prattville) Primarily a fullback in high school, Jeremy will likely man the linebacker position at Alabama. As a prep senior at fullback, Jeremy rushed for 850 yards and five touchdowns. As a junior, Walker had 70 tackles and two quarterback sacks and rushed 83 times for 431 yards and seven TDs. He also caught six passes for 78 yards. He has a 33 inch vertical jump, bench presses 350 pounds and squats 450. Coached by Tommy Lucas. He selected the Tide over Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss. Forrest Davis Says: "One of the few H-back types in the South and the only five rated player with the ability to play FB, TE, RB and H-back. Considered an impact player." Leslie Williams Defensive Line 6-5, 225, Stone Mountain, Georgia (Stone Mountain) Williams was a four-year starter in high school, two at Stone Mountain and two at South Mountain High School in Arizona before transferring to Georgia. He had 68 solo tackles, 25 assists, 17 sacks, six fumbles caused and two recoveries as a junior at Stone Mountain and earned his team's MVP award. . Coached by Bill Harris. Derrick Woods Wide Receiver 5-9, 175, Memphis, Tennessee (Melrose) A teammate of signee David Paine at Melrose, Derrick had 72 receptions for 1,500 yards and 20 TDs on the state championship team. He had 135 receptions for 36 touchdowns during his junior and season seasons. In the 1998 state championship game, he had 8 receptions for 182 yards and three TDs and was named the game's MVP. His junior season, Woods caught 65 passes for 1,400 yards and 16 TDs as he earned All-Memphis and All-State honors. Coached by Tim Thompson. He chose the Tide over Tennessee, Ole Miss, Auburn and Kentucky. Jamie Newberg, Border Wars, Says: "Has good hands and makes plays. If he gets stronger, he could surprise many at the next level."
