RUNNING BACKS
Shontua Ray (5-9, 185) Montevallo High School, AL - Ray is the states fastest football prospect and has racked up some impressive statistics over the past two seasons. Ray compiled 2,281 yards and 32 TDs on 258 carries during his senior campaign. For his career, Ray ranks with some of the states finest as evidenced by 6,152 yards (7th all-time in AL) and 71 TDs on 728 carries (8.45 ypc). As a junior, Ray won the Class 4A state 200 and 400 meter events posting times of 10.59 and 21.46, respectively. Ray chose Alabama over Auburn and has yet to qualify. Bench Presses 325lbs and squats 450lbs. Has been timed in the 40 at 4.3! Rated a 9.5/10 in Deep South’s Recruiting Guide and a 4+ from Forrest Davis. He made Forrest Davis’ 2nd Team All South. He is attempting to pass his Alabama Graduation Exam and due to his dyslexia he is finally going to be given an oral exam. He will probably be a partial qualifier. I played against him in High School and he rushed for over 200 yards against us as a Freshman. He’s a BLUR. Committed to Alabama on December 4, 1997.
Ahmaad Galloway (6-0, 200) Millington High School, TN - Ahmaad was one of the most sought after running backs in the South as evidenced by offers from Nebraska, Texas, Notre Dame, Penn State and a host of other national powers. Ahmaad was generally considered as a top 5 prospect in the state of Tennessee. Ahmaad compiled over 4000 yards rushing and 48 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Ahmaad is a powerful running back with an aggressive running style and good speed. Ahmaad is fully qualified. Bench presses 275lbs and squats 500lbs. Has been timed in the 40 at 4.5 and was rated a 9.5/10 from Deep South and a 4/5 from Forrest Davis. Committed to Alabama on November 25, 1997.
Marvin Brown (6-0, 240) DeMatha High School, MD - Marvin may be the sleeper of the entire class and could receive early playing time at Alabama. Marvin is a very good athlete with excellent strength and balance. Marvin rushed for 927 yards on 111 carries and registered an amazing 9 pancake blocks per game during his senior campaign. Marvin is fully qualified and he picked the Tide over Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Indiana and Illinois. Bench presses 400lbs and squats around 500lbs. Marvin has been clocked in the 40 at 4.75 and was a Prep Star All-American and Washington Post Second Team All-Metro. Committed to Alabama on January 14, 1997.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Freddie Milons (5-10, 175) Starkville High School, MS - Freddie emerged after a strong senior campaign as
one of the top wide receiver prospects in the nation. Milons is known for his quick feet and big play ability
and should see early playing time at Alabama. Freddie camped at Alabama and made a strong impression on
the Tide coaching staff. He played quarterback in high school and accounted for almost 3,500 yards and 44
touchdowns in his prep career. Freddie was named the 4th best prospect in the state of Mississippi by the
Clarion Ledger. Milons is fully qualified and chose Alabama over Ole Miss, Florida, Mississippi State and
Tennessee. Bench presses 265lbs and squats 350lbs and has been clocked in the 40 at 4.4! Deep South rated
him a perfect 10 and Forrest Davis ranked him as a 5! A fellow member of RIG 103 coached against Freddie
during Freddie’s Sophomore year in high school. The first play of the game he turned the corner on an
option and he was so fast as he ran by cups rose off the ground due to the wind he generated. He is quoted
as saying “I would love to be like the DEUCE. Everybody knew what play Alabama was going to run but it
didn’t matter, because nobody could stop him!” Needless to say he is a STUD. He committed to Alabama
on January 20, 1997.
Eric Locke (5-9, 180) Murfreesboro- Riverdale High School, TN - Eric is one of the most decorated prep
prospects in Tennessee history. Eric lead his high school team to a state championship as a senior and was
the first player ever to be named Class 5A Clinic Bowl Defensive and Offensive MVP. As a junior, Eric had
65 carries for 550 yards and 12 TDs and he also passed 76 of 105 for 1300 yards and 14 TDs. Eric finished
his senior campaign with 1,654 yards rushing and 27 TDs on 154 carries for a 10.5 yards per carry average.
Eric's 1,654 yards rushing set a state record for single season rushing yards for a quarterback. The most
amazing statistic regarding Locke was that he rushed for 871 yards and 13 TDs on just 67 carries in 5
playoff games. Eric also completed 64 of 103 passes for 1,011 yards and 9 TDs and 2 interceptions. Eric
projects as a wide receiver for the Tide but could also play corner back, punt returner and quarterback in
special situations. Eric projects as a full qualifier and chose Alabama over Tennessee, Vanderbilt, North
Carolina, Ohio State and Notre Dame. He benches 345lbs, squats 485, and runs the 40 in 4.4 seconds. Rated
as a 9.5/10 in Deep South and a perfect 10 from Forrest Davis. He made Forrest’s 1st Team All South. He
committed to Alabama on January 28, 1997.
Sam Collins (6-2, 180) Fayette County High School, AL - Sam teamed with Luke Tucker in high school and is one of the most productive wide receivers in state history. Sam ranks 4th all-time in career receptions with 169, 1st in most receiving yardage in a single game with 298 yards, 1st in most receiving yardage in a single season with 1,574 yards (75 receptions, 14 TDs in 12 games), and is tied with 2 others for most TDs in a single game with 5. Over the past two seasons, Collins has accounted for 3,844 yards, 34 TDs and an impressive 22.7 yards per catch. Sam is noted for having excellent hands, runs precise routes and has good straight-ahead speed. Sam is fully qualified and chose Alabama over Mississippi State and Kentucky. Sam benches 270lbs and runs the 40 in 4.5 seconds. He was rated a 9.5 by Deep South and a 4+ by Forrest Davis. He also made Forrest’s 3rd Team All South. A fellow member of RIG 103 coached against Sam in a preseason Jamboree and says Sam runs the best routes of anyone he has seen in 3 years of coaching. Move over Chad Key because here comes Alabama’s next great possession receiver. He committed to Alabama on December 9, 1997.
QUARTERBACKS
Tyler Watts (6-3, 205) Pelham High School, AL - Watts is the consensus top quarterback prospect in the
South. Tyler was recently named to the prestigious USA Today Super 25 list. As a senior, Watts completed
200-of-342 passes (58.5 percent) for 2,485 yards this season. The High School All-American threw 20
touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Watts, who runs a 4.65-second 40-yard dash, also rushed for 631
yards on 104 carries and had 10 touchdowns rushing. Watts opened the door for the Tide to land the
dynamic duo of Freddie Milons and Eric Locke, and the states top wide receiver in Sam Collins. Watts is
fully qualified and chose Alabama over Tennessee. Tyler benches 255lbs and squats 475lbs. His greatest
asset may be his speed at 4.7 in the forty. One former pro scout says Tyler is the only quarterback in the last
thirty years to remind him of Roger Staubach. He is rated perfect by both Deep South and Forrest Davis and
was both organizations Player of the Year. He committed to Alabama on September 9, 1997.
Luke Tucker (6-0, 180) Fayette County, AL - Tucker teamed with Sam Collins to form one of the top prep pass/receiving combos in state history. The southpaw played in a passing offensive scheme and used his strong arm to throw for over 7,000 yards in his career which places him 3rd overall in the state record books in career yardage. Luke, the brother of former Tide quarterback Lance Tucker is fully qualified and chose Alabama over Mississippi State and Kentucky. Benches 290lbs and runs the 40 in 4.75 seconds. A fellow RIG 103 member coached against Luke and feels he is more developed and throws the ball harder than his brother Lance. The consensus here is that Luke will probably enter school in January 1999, redshirt, and have 2 years eligibility remaining after Tyler Watts graduates. We also feel Luke will see some time holding kicks for AJ Diaz whose kicking duties have been limited due to the fact no one on our current roster could consistently hold the ball for a left footed kicker. Luke, let me introduce you to two very prominent figures in the history of Alabama football, Larry Abney and Jeff Wall. Luke committed to Alabama on January 12, 1997.
TIGHT ENDS
Terry Jones, Jr. (6-4 250) Tuscaloosa Central High School, AL - Terry is the son Tide strength coach Terry Jones, Sr., who was an outstanding player at Alabama (1975-77) and in the NFL (Green Bay Packers, 1978-85). Terry did not play football his senior year and has only played one year of high school football. Terry earned 6A All-State honors as a junior as he registered 85 tackles and 2 quarterback sacks. Terry also excels as a basketball player and averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds as a junior. Terry is fully qualified. Terry benches 280lbs and squats 440lbs. He was rated 9.75 by Deep South and a 4+ by Forrest Davis. Terry would have been on of the most sought after prospects in the state except for the fact he had personal differences with Coach Busby of Central. Terry will probably walk on the Basketball team as a Freshman and plans to enter school this Summer in order to get ahead in some of his core requirements. Terry committed to Alabama on January 8, 1997.
Johnovan Morgan (6-4 270) Carol City High School, FL - Johnovan is the half brother of former Tide great and NFL Pro Bowler, Derrick Thomas. Johnovan played both defensive end and tight end during his senior campaign. Johnovan chose Alabama over West Virginia. Johnovan has yet to qualify and will likely begin his career in junior college. Runs a 4.7 forty and was rated as a 3+ by Forrest Davis. He caught 15 passes for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns as a Senior. He will probably end up in a Junior College for two years and then it is rumored that Derrick Thomas will pay his way to school at Alabama. He committed to Alabama on February 3, 1997.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Bart Raulston (6-7 300) Sylvania High School, AL - Bart was one of the most decorated offensive line prospects in the South. During his senior campaign, Bart graded 88% for his offensive line play. Bart has been described as having all the tools to be a successful offensive tackle at the next level. Bart has excellent size, good strength and quickness. Bart was named Class 3A All-State as a senior and was also named to several high school All-American lists. He also plays center on Sylvania's basketball team. He bench presses 360 pounds, squats 525 and has an excellent 27-inch vertical jump. As a junior, Bart once shattered a backboard while dunking during warm-ups. Bart is rated a 9.75 by Deep South and a 5 by Forrest Davis. The neat thing about Bart is he was in Tuscaloosa on numerous weekends helping recruit other prospects for the University. He made Forrest’s 1st Team All South. He committed to Alabama on September 24, 1997.
Kenric Lott (6-5 300) Jones Community College, Blackshear, GA - Kenric played his high school football at Pierce County and was selected to the Florida Times Union Super 24 as a prep senior. Lott has been described as having NFL potential as he is agile enough to play guard and physical enough to play tackle. Lott should compete for immediate playing time when he arrives in Tuscaloosa in August. Lott is on pace to qualify. Lott chose Alabama over Florida State. Kenric runs a 5.1 forty and was ranked by Deep South as a perfect 10. He committed to Alabama on January 14, 1997,.
Marico Portis (6-2 300) Prichard Vigor High School, AL - Marico teamed with Alabama signee Damien Jones and Auburn signee Roderick Jones in high school. Marico graded 85% during his senior campaign. Marico was an all-state selection and also garnered Honorable Mention All-American status as selected by USA Today. Marico has been described as having quick feet, very good strength and athleticism and the potential to become an excellent pulling guard in college. Marico is on pace to be a full qualifier. Marico chose Alabama over Auburn, Florida and Baylor. Benches 420lbs and squats 475lbs. He runs a sub 5 second forty and was rated by Deep South as a 9.5 and a 5 by Forrest Davis. Forrest calls him the best pulling guard in the South this year. He made Forrest’s 2nd Team All South. He committed to Alabama on January 20, 1997.
Ray Marshall (6-5 320) Montevallo High School, AL - Marshall was a two-way lineman in high school and was teammates with Shontua Ray. Montevallo Head Coach Eddie Williams describes Marshall as raw with very good athletic ability and work ethic. Marshall has only played two years of organized football. Marshall graded 91% during his senior campaign and was named to the Class 4A All-State team. Marshall projects as a qualifier and chose Alabama over Southern Mississippi. Ray Benches 350 lbs and was rated a 9.25 by Deep South. He committed to Alabama on December 4, 1997.
Lannis Baxley (6-6 250) Burke County High School, GA - Baxley has very good feet and easily has the frame to carry another 40-lbs. Baxley has long arms and good leverage. Baxley was named 1st Team Class 3A All-State by the Atlanta Journal Constitution and graded 80% on his blocks during his senior campaign. Baxley is fully qualified and selected Alabama over Virginia. Lannis will probably begin school in January 1999 in order to further physically develope before beginning school. He benches 250lbs and squats 450lbs. He was rated by Forrest Davis as a 3+. He committed to Alabama on January 21, 1997.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Reggie Myles (5-11 180) Pascagoula High School, Pascagoula, MS - Reggie is one of the most decorated
defensive backs in the nation. As a junior, Reggie registered 58 solo tackles, 23 assists, 4 interceptions, 2
returned for touchdowns, 10 pass breakups and 2 punt returns for touchdowns. He also averaged 20.0 yards
on kickoff returns with touchdowns of 42 and 68 yards. Reggie finished his senior campaign with 65 tackles
and 4 interceptions and continued to excel on special teams. Reggie averaged 22.9 yards on punt returns and
49.5 yards on kickoff returns. Reggie also excels on the baseball diamond. He plays left field where he hit
.396 last year with 4 home runs. His older brother, Jimmy, played football at Mississippi State from 1991-94
and his father was a defensive end at Jackson State. Reggie selected the Alabama over Mississippi State,
Southern Miss, LSU and Florida. Reggie projects as a full qualifier. Reggie benches 265lbs, squats 405lbs,
and he runs a 4.5 forty. Deep South rated Reggie as a perfect 10 and a 4+ by Forrest Davis. He also made
Forrest’s 2nd Team All South. He committed to Alabama on February 2, 1997.
Miguel Merritt (6-1 210) City College of San Francisco, Hopkinsville, KY - Miguel was regarded as the nations top junior college strong safety. Miguel was selected 1st Team Junior College All-American helping to lead CCSF to a 21-2 record over the past 2 seasons. Miguel teamed with Canary Knight (Alabama) and James Cotton (Ohio State) to form one of the top defensive trios in the junior college ranks. Miguel led CCSF with 7 interceptions during his sophomore campaign. The University of Kentucky placed him at CCSF out of high school. Miguel was a dominating high school performer excelling as both a wide receiver and strong safety. As a senior, Miguel scored 5 touchdowns from 70 yards or more, including 95-yard kickoff return as a junior. He caught 39 passes for 650 yards, and rushed for 650 more scoring 15 touchdowns. Miguel is likely to play strong safety at Alabama but could also move over to outside linebacker if necessary. He selected Alabama over Arizona State, Indiana and Cincinnati. Miguel was second in the Mr. Kentucky Football voting to .......... Tim Couch. In other words, Miguel isn’t too bad a football player. He plans to enter school in June. He committed to Alabama on January 29, 1997.
Phillip Weeks (6-1 170) Union County High School, Lake Butler, FL - Weeks is a two-year starter and the brother of Auburn linebacker Adrian Weeks. Weeks is from the same high school that produced Alabama quarterback Andrew Zow. During his senior campaign, Weeks registered 95 tackles, 6 interceptions, 1 blocked punt, and 3 fumble recoveries. Week's high school lost only one game during his prep career. Weeks is slatted to play free safety in college. Weeks projects as a full qualifier and he chose the Tide over Auburn and Florida. He runs a 4.4 forty and was rated as a 3+ by Forrest Davis. He committed to Alabama on January 21, 1997.
LINEBACKERS
Darius Gilbert (6-2 210) Oxford High School, Oxford, AL - As a senior at Oxford High School, Darius had 125 solo tackles, 5 interceptions, 6 sacks, and 4 blocked kicks, including 3 PATs. Darius registered 135 tackles and an amazing 9 interceptions as a junior. Darius is generally regarded as one of the top outside linebacker prospects in the South. Darius also excels in track, basketball and on the baseball diamond. As a junior, he hit .350 with 8 home runs and went 6-3 as a pitcher. Darius projects as a full qualifier. He chose Alabama over Tennessee and Auburn. Benches 290lbs, squats 450lbs, and runs a 4.6 forty. Rated as a 9.75 by Deep South and a 5 by Forrest Davis. Darius also averaged a Double-Double this past season for Oxford’s basketball team. A fellow RIG 103 member coached against Darius and we have watched game film on Darius and he is a prototype Ralph Staten linebacker. Whenever Oxford needed a big offensive play the put Darius in the slot and threw to him. He also was everywhere defensively and made almost every tackle. In other words, WE LOVE DARIUS! He committed to Alabama on January 26, 1997.
Marvin Constant (6-1 255) Tuscaloosa Central High School, Tuscaloosa, AL - Marvin spent most of his
senior campaign at running back but switched to linebacker near the end of the season. Marvin rushed 88
times for 522 yards and 5 touchdowns. As a linebacker, he had 33 solo tackles and 29 assists in four games.
He missed most of his junior season following arm surgery. Marvin is slatted to begin his career as a
linebacker but he could possibly grow into a defensive lineman. Marvin is one of the strongest high school
prospects in the South as evidenced by his bench press of 420 and a 600-pound squat. He also throws the
shot (58-10) and discus (146) in track. Marvin projects as a full qualifier and he chose Alabama over
Tennessee and Florida. Marvin was rated as a 9.75 by Deep South and a perfect 5 by Forrest. He also made
Forrest’s 3rd Team All South. A fellow RIG103 member coached against Marvin and feels he will make his
biggest contribution on the defensive side of the ball. He also feels Marvin is one of the fastest players at his
size in the state. He committed to Alabama on October 28, 1997.
Victor Ellis (6-2 215) Red Bank High School, Chattanooga, TN - Victor played his sophomore season at Millington High School with fellow Tide signee Ahmaad Galloway before transferring to Red Bank High School for his junior and senior campaigns. Ellis primarily played safety in high school, but is slatted as an outside linebacker at the college level. As a junior, Victor registered 89 tackles and 5 interceptions. Victor concluded his senior campaign with 79 tackles and 5 interceptions. His best games occurred at the end of the year as he was moved to middle linebacker. Against Columbia Central, Victor had 19 tackles and in his next game, Victor turned in 16 tackles. He has run the 200 meters in 23.2. Victor is academically qualified. Victor chose Alabama early in the process over North Carolina State and UTC. He benches 280 lbs, squats 450lbs, and runs a 4.5 forty. He was rated by Deep South as a 9.5 and a 3+ by Forrest Davis. Victor also averaged a Double-Double for his high school basketball team this past season. He committed to Alabama on November 17, 1997.
Theo Sanders (6-4 220) Shades Valley High School, Birmingham, AL - Theo played many positions in high school including tight end, wide receiver, linebacker, and defensive end. Theo projects as a linebacker at the college level. Theo has good quickness and speed and bench presses 320-lbs. Theo averaged more than 10 tackles per game during his senior season. Theo projects as a full qualifier and he chose Alabama early in the process over Southern Mississippi and Ole Miss. Theo was rated a 9.25 by Deep South and a 4/5 by Forrest Davis. Not bad for someone projected as a PROJECT? He committed to Alabama on November 11, 1997.
Aries Monroe (6-2 220) Godby High School, Tallahassee, FL - Aries was considered one of the South's most talented defensive prospects. Aries had over 150 tackles and a school record 29 career quarterback sacks the past two seasons. Monroe was selected to Team Florida in the 1998 Florida-Georgia High School All-Star game after earning Class 5A All-State honors. Aries chose Alabama over Auburn and Central Florida. Aries will likely begin his college career at either Coffeyville CC or Hinds CC. Benches 345, squats 620, and runs a 4.55 forty. Deep South rated him as a 9.75 and Forrest Davis rated him as a perfect 5. He made Forrest’s 2nd Team All South. He committed to Alabama on February 2, 1997.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Jerome Kindal Moorehead (6-4 265) Melrose High School, TN - Moorehead is regarded as one of the
nations finest defensive prospects. Moorehead has been described as big, strong, quick, fast, with great
lateral movement. He plays the game with great intensity and does some things that are hard to teach. As a
junior, he was selected All-Memphis Region and All-State after a season in which he had 150 tackles, 21
sacks, 13 tackle behind the line and 7 caused fumbles. As senior Kindal continued to demonstrate why he
was one of the South's most decorated prospects. Kindal registered 176 tackles and 27 sacks in 15 games.
Kindal chose Alabama over Tennessee and Ole Miss. Moorehead projects as a full qualifier. Kindal benches
385 lbs and runs a 4.6 forty. He was rated a perfect 10 by Deep South and a 5 by Forrest Davis. He made
Forrest’s 1st Team All South. With him and Travis Carroll playing the middle next year in our new 3-4
scheme our defensive problems should be solved. He committed to Alabama on August 29, 1997.
Cornelius Griffin (6-4 270) Pearl River CC, Brundridge, AL - Cornelius signed with Auburn for the 1996-97 recruiting campaign but failed to graduate from junior college. Cornelius garnered 1st Team All-American status as a sophomore at Pearl River Community College. Cornelius is expected to receive early playing time as a defensive end at Alabama. He played at Pike County High School in Brundridge and is the first cousin of current Tide wide receiver Quincy Jackson. Cornelius is currently enrolled in Troy State in an attempt to accumulate 6 transferable hours that would make him eligible to enroll in Alabama in August. He chose Alabama over Auburn. Cornelius runs a 4.9 forty and is on schedule to pass his 6 hours at Troy State and plans to enter school this Summer. He committed to Alabama on February 3, 1997.
Todd Whitmore (6-4 285) East Mississippi JC, Ranburne, AL - Todd signed with the Tide in December and enrolled for the spring semester. Todd saw some action on the offensive line as a freshman both played exclusively on defense as a sophomore. During his sophomore campaign, Whitmore had 75 tackles, 14 tackles behind the line, 4 sacks and 12 quarterback pressures. Todd earned Mississippi Association of Community and Junior College All-State honors and was named to the first-team Northern Division. He is a 1995 graduate of Ranburne High School in Ranburne, Ala., where he was a three-sport letterman. He earned All-State honors in football. As a freshman at East Miss. JC, Todd had 45 tackles, 8 sacks, 8 tackles behind the line and 6 quarterback pressures. Todd is expected to begin his career at Alabama as a defensive tackle, but could possibly be moved to the offensive line. Whitmore chose Alabama over Auburn. Todd benches 390 lbs and was rated a 9.75 by Deep South. He committed to Alabama on November 29, 1997.
Canary Knight (6-3 250) City College of San Francisco, Tallahassee, FL - CCSF Head Coach George Rush describes Knight as a tremendous athlete with great quickness, strength and speed. During his sophomore campaign at CCSF, Knight registered 96 tackles, 15 for losses, 7 sacks, blocked 4 field goals and had 1 interception, which he returned 90 yards for a touchdown. His team went 11-1 last season and 10-1 his freshman year. He was selected as All-Golden State first team. Knight will be joined at Alabama by CCSF teammate Miguel Merritt. Knight projects as a rush defensive end for Alabama, but he could also play outside linebacker. Knight picked Alabama over FSU, California, South Carolina and Ohio State. Canary was called CCSF’s best player by his head coach and once they moved him to rush end he dominated their games. He runs a 4.55 forty and plans on entering school this June. He committed to Alabama on January 25, 1997.
Mario Monds (6-3 330) Hutchinson Community College, Ft. Pierce, FL - Monds finished his sophomore campaign at Hutchinson by garnering 1st Team All-Conference honors. He registered 72 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and 3 blocked field goals. Monds set the Hutchinson school record for bench press (425) and incline press (365) as he led Hutchinson CC to a 7-3 mark in 1996 and a 6-4 record in 1997. Mario comes from an athletically gifted family. Mario's father was a 3-year All - American at Nebraska and Mario's brother (Wonderful) made it all the way to AAA with the Atlanta Braves. Mario will have 3 years to play 2. Monds selected Alabama over Oklahoma State. Mario projects as a qualifier, but it will be close. Mario played some fullback in short yardage situations due to his uncanny speed. He may have to take some summer classes in order to qualify but he should be in Tuscaloosa come August. He benches 500 lbs and has been consistently clocked at 4.8 forties. He will become our “Fridge”. He committed to Alabama on December 12, 1997.
Derek Sanders (6-5 250) Washington County High School, Sandersville, GA - Derek was a two-year starter at Washington County High School where he teamed with Terrence Edwards (Georgia) and Jessie Miller (Georgia) to led his team to their second straight Class 2A state championship. Derek hails from the same school that produced Tide strong safety Chris Horne. As a senior, Derek registered 90 tackles and 5 sacks. An honor roll student, Derek also played on Washington County's basketball team. Derek picked Alabama over South Carolina, Duke and Georgia. Derek may need a redshirt year to develope.
