Mike Huovila's Nanowrimo Web PageSo at the encouragement of my friend, Jerry, I participated in Nanowrimo last year. I was really in over my head: The longest thing that I ever wrote before that was a ten page paper in school on some music composer. Nanowrimo required me to write 50,000 words (175 pages). The sheer length of the story required a variety of complex characters, plot within plot, and a dynamic breathing world.
It was a fantastic experience. So October 2004 rolls around. A few things have changed. I'm working as an ex-pat in Paris for a job that requires more attention from me than any previous job. I'm struggling to learn the language, become familiar with the surroundings, heck, even attempt to feel at home. So I guess I should shelf Nanowrimo 2004 and concentrate on "normal life". Ha. So I have some ideas for my second novel (man, I love saying that). I just read Perdido Street Station, which I loved! But I don't think I can write in this type of setting, so I'm trying to stay away from being tempted into some Steampunk story that I would be totally uncomfortable writing. Also, I've read a few books on writing (thanks Shimona) so I figure this year will be tougher (what do they say about a little bit of knowledge?). Anywho, I'm going to give it my best and see what comes of it. If you are interested in contacting me, you can reach me on the Nanowrimo web site. My user name is "Huovi". I plan to track my progress and thought process on this site. I will post excerpt of my work here as well. Update: I did not finish this year which is not a big shocker considering my situation. It is a bit of a shame, but I accomplished a lot. I did not get around to posting excerpts and such. Hopefully I will do so some time in the future... but more importantly hopefully I will continue the story.
