The 2005 Football Pool

as told by the Commish

Week 16

The Providence Steamrollers tied the Karl Knechtels as the wealthiest franchise in the football pool (for one more week, at least). Andrew Benson went 11-3-2 and clinched victory as New England sailed over the Jets on the last Monday Night Football game on ABC (big deal, games will be on ESPN next year). Andrew congratulations on being $51 richer!

Other notables this week with 10 wins (way too many to mention with 9 wins)

Advantage Burns, Steve Yamarik - 10-4-2 - Mr. Burns is trying to make this football pool a competition. Burns' 10 wins eclipsed Weinstein's mark by two games and allowed him to open up a one game lead on 2nd place. Only question remains: Can he come up big this weekend and hope that Weinstein comes up small?

State of the Pool

As a whole, we picked @ 46% this week, not too bad considering that six teams did not make their picks. For those who are getting their picks in on time, keep up the good work. For those of you who are not, please read my e-mails and stop drinking so much on the weekend. On the season, we stand @ 48%.

Overall Leaders

The true mark of a champion is to persevere even on days when you do not have your best stuff. Such was the case for our leader, the Swami, Jason Weinstein of the franchise, Jason Weinstein. Jay struggled early on in the week but managed a solid 8-6-2 mark on the week. Jay lost two games to his nearest competitor this week but still maintains a, difficult to catch, 6 game lead over.....

Advantage Burns, Steve Yamarik - Burns jumped from 3rd place into 2nd place with an impressive 10 wins. Second place is a nice chunk of change but he will no doubt have his eyes on the big prize this week. After all, history will only remember the football pool champion, not the runner up.

More contenders:

3rd place: Two Beer Queer, Marichelle Tanag - At 125 wins, this queer is 1 game behind Burns and 7 behind Weinstein. Her unorthodox picking style may make her the #1 contender to defeat Weinstein.

4th place: I Love the Bean, Gary Larry Engel - At 124 wins, this queer is 1 game out of the money. His impressive performance this year is the only thing as close to as shocking as Weinstein's performance

Also 4th place:Karl Knechtel, Karl Knechtel - Bounced back from two pathetic weeks and still finds himself well within striking distance of some $$$$.

5th place: CollieCanseco, Colin Greene - Only team that has been hotter over the past seven weeks has been Mrs. Rog. Colin is two games out of the money.

Magic Number:

Weinstein's magic number is 11. Any combination of 11 Weinstein wins/ties or 11 losses by his top competitor and he is the new champion of the football pool.

Tie Breaker:

If the overall standings end in a first place tie, we will go to the playoff round to decide the prize money. 1st place will got the competitor with the most wins vs. the spread in the playoffs.

The Basement:

Moose Haas is picking at 25% this season

The pressure is on! Good luck in week 17!
