Brett was born in Auckland (Nzl) on April (27) 1969. Begin play tennis at age 5, turned pro in 1988, won his first tournament in Newport (1991) in doubles teamed with italian Gian Luca Pozzi. Won Canberra Challenger in 1990 and had his explotion in 1992, reaching QF in Taipei and Indianapolis winning qual'y tournament. Then the challenger circuit in Europe, Aachen, Brest, Munchen; started no. 225 finished the 1992 in the 73rd place in the singles rankings. In 1993 made his first apparence in Grand Slam events reaching the QF in Melbourne defeting seeded Thomas Muster in the first round and loosing to Pete Sampras, got semis in Copenhaghen and finalist in Schenectady where lost to Enqvist 76 in the third, and the QF in Montreal where defeated Pete Sampras 76 63. He closed the season as no. 43. In 1994 ended as no. 87 in singles but won 3 doubles tournament in Copenhaghen (w/Damm), Hong Kong (w/Grabb) and Coral Springs (w/Bale). In 1995 won the first event of the year in Wellington (Challenger) defeting Damm in the final, bringing back in the top 50 (closing as 42), reached for the first time the World Doubles Championship final in Eindhoven with Tommy Ho (Usa), during the season won the Mercedes Super 9 event in Indian Wells. In 1996 was finalist in Auckland loosing to Novak where reached the doubles final with Bjorkman. During the season was QF in Halle (d. Muster). Reached the 4th rd in Melbourne loosing to Becker (won first set 61) and the 3rd Rd at Wimbledon loosing to Pioline (then finalist). Missed 5 months due to an injury. Closed the gap as no. 100. In 1997 was finalist in Newport loosing to Sargsian. Won 3 times in doubles, two with Andrei Olhovskyi in Europe and one with Gimelstob in Newport.
