MidNite Madness Invades the Beach

While driving to the Pyramid last night I did not know what to expect. I mean would there be six other people besides the team? or would the place be packed? I would not have been surprised at either turn out. Therefore to say that I was completely blown away by the crowd of over 3,000 crazy students and fans is an understatement.

The doors opened around 10:00pm for the FREE event that included free pizza and soft drinks (which undoubtedly increased the turnout among the students) the festivities began right on time at 12:01 with a 3pt contest that matched up a member from the womens team and one member of the mens team. Mate was part of the two person winning team. This was followed by a dunking contest (I'm not sure if anyone was the winner!) and then each team (mens and womens) held a 10-15 minute 5x5 scrimmage.

Random observations...

Mate Milissa is a true 6'11",and was one of the best players on the court. Was able to hit the 3 and post up inside.

Ian Milley looked a little quicker and a little harder.

Rock Lloyd is going to remind many people of James Cotton with his slash to the hoop moves, I wonder if he'll get the calls that James got? very broad across the shoulders.

Allan Gomez is not 6'5", maybe 6'3" and may have trouble getting his shot off, he starts the ball low on his shoulder, BIG question mark.

Tommie Davis has not lost a step, and looked excited to be out there, although the book is still out on whether he can finish a drive.

Grant was in plain clothes and told me that he hopes to able to play by mid- December, he looked very good.

Antrone had his family there, and looked as if he hadn't put on a pound.

James Delone must have a 35" verticle and may force his way into games with his athletic ability.

Ron Johnson, the freshman point guard, is at least 6'0" if not 6'1". He looked a little tentative, but should improve, maybe a red shirt candidate.

Richies Smalls is possibly 10 lbs heavier than Antrone if that, reminded me of the many 6'8" 210lb players from New Mexico St over the years. Will definitely start and will be a force in the BW.

Spoke to Kevin Cutler (6'8" F '86-'88) he is doing great, in sales for Nabisco and looking to go back to graduate school.

Brandon Titus just completed playing in the SBl league in Corpus Christi Texas and has a try-out with a professional team from Austrailia within the next two weeks.

Charles O'Neal was not with the team and not sure if he was even in attendance. Not sure if he is able to be with the team according to NCAA rules.
