SMS Tops Illinois St.

The Bears opened the MVC season with a pair of victories Saturday over Illinois State. Matt Skyles(3-2)pitched SMS to a 8-2 win in the first game. Jason Frey(1) pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief to gain the save. Jon Hale(6) & Ryan Howard(3) homered for the Bears.
In the second game, the Bears scored 4 runs in the 8th, and 5 in the 9th for a 13-4 victory, raising their overall record to 10-3, 2-0 in the MVC. Matt Smith(1-0) got the win for SMS. Matt Cepicky(6) & Nick Kays(4) went deep for the Bears. SMS will complete the weekend series with 2 games Sunday @1:00p.m.

Bears Lose in 9th

SMS used the long ball to take a 2 run lead over Baylor heading into the 9th inning, but it wasn't enough as Jason Jennings hit a 3 run homer to seal the victory for the Bears from Waco. Ryan Howard(2) hit a two run shot in the 7th, Matt Cepicky(5) duplicated the homerun in the 8th,and Nick Kays(3) hit a solo shot in the top of the 9th as SMS took a 5-3 lead.
Matt Skyles(2-2) took the loss for SMS in relief.
