BOY

Title: Boy

Author: Roald Dahl

Genre: Autobiography

Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916, and at the age of 68 he wrote
the biography «Boy». «Boy» is the first book in a set of two about
Roald’s life. He has written a lot of books for both children and
grown ups. After a long life and a lot of well-known books, Roald
died in 1990.

When Roald was 7 years old his mother decided to send him to Llandaff
Cathedral school. He got himself five buddies, and they all made some
act of vandalism. Once they got punished by five crack from the whip.
His mother stepped in and took Roald out of the school.
>From the age of 9 to 13 Roald went to St Peter’s. At St Peter’s
School he wrote letters home every week.
Roald was very attached to his mother, and he wrote several letters
to her when he was away from home. They were very attached to each
other, because he was her only son, and she hide all the letters from
him.
As almost every young boy Roald got bit by homesickness. The schools
in those days were very strict and difficult, and Roald did only look
forward to the day he was going back home.
>From the age of four until he was seventeen, Roald and his family
went to Norway. Roald was pure Norwegian by blood and he could speak
Norwegian, so he thought of Norway as his home.

In the book we are introduced to the typical and old-fashioned
English public schools, and the methods they was using there in the
old-days. He gives us an insight into the life there, the time he
felt ill at ease, and the horror and the anxiety he felt for the
dictators (also called teachers) that ruled the school.

13 years old, Roald went to the Repton School, a famous public
School. At Repton they had prefects, but they were never called that.
They were called Boazers, and they had the power of life and death
over the junior boys.
The School affected Roald very much, especially the Boazers and the
teachers who exposed Roald to become more respectful among more
powerful people.
Roald was treated badly by his teachers, and headmasters.
When his principal became the Archbishop of Canterbury, he began to
have doubts about religion and God. He couldn’t understand why this
person was chosen to be God’s salesman on earth, and he meant by his
opinion that the whole business tasted badly.

I really enjoyed reading the book. It`s well written and easy to
understand. I can recommend this book to everyone aged between 10-
100.
