Filmmaker Returns from New Zealand
I returned from New Zealand about a month ago, and I'm proud to tell you about the success I experienced in my coaching debut.
First, I coached a 13-year old youth team. Their legacy had the rather unfortunate distinction of having never won a game in their four year history. That all changed when I installed our single-wing offense. Because football is a minor sport in New Zealand, interest in the sport is still growing. Therefore, the youth teams play eight men on a side. Our 8-man version of single-wing featured power sweeps, spinners, reverses, and buck-laterals. I'm proud that not only did our team record their first ever win, but we went on to win the championship!
Next, as a receivers/db's coach for the men's team, I assisted Head Coach Joe Ashfield in winning the North Harbour Pride's second Kiwi Bowl National Championship in three years. Our undefeated team utilized a Clemson style shotgun offense, but included plays indigenous to the single-wing, including the spinner series.
Finally, I was a coach for the New Zealand national teams, the Haka. Both the men's and the 19's team had a successful one-game tour of Australia running true 11-man versions of the single-wing.
I owe our enourmous success in New Zealand to all the coaches I've met along the way. Thanks for everything.
Sincerely,
Steve Blahitka
