Latest News: Ken Griffey, Jr. is back in the line up for the Reds and will not play in the All-Star Game nor the Home Run Derby!
Derek's Reds Column (Pre-All*Star Game): Because of Ken Griffey, Jr.'s absence from the 2001 season, he did not make the All*Star Game nor the Century 21 Rome Run Derby in Seattle. At the baseball All*Star break many players in Major League Baseball have all ready played around 80 games, Griffey played no more than 25. Even though Kenneth only played 25 games so far the 2001 baseball season does not look bright. In these 25 games he hit 4 homers, 12 RBIs, and a .227 batting average. It is possible that he will heat up in the months of July and August to bring up his numbers to over par. Even though in the past he started off strong, but slacked off toward the end of the season. However, many say that because Griffey did not have a first half he will do extremely well in the middle end of the season. All of us Griffey fans are waiting and hoping that his will happen and he will play up to the media's expectations.
Griffey is injured: Ken Griffey Jr. will miss the rest of spring training and possibly the first few games of the regular season because of a pulled hamstring. Griffey's left hamstring was swollen Tuesday, a day after he slipped while rounding third base in a game against Kansas City. Cincinnati opens Monday against Atlanta "We're not looking at putting him on the disabled list," Dr. Kremchek said. "As of now, I do believe there's a possibility he'll play on opening day. We're going to do everything we can to get him in the best shape we possibly can. "On the other hand, we're not going to do something that's going to allow him to rehurt himself on opening day, just to play that one particular game." Griffey will spend several hours each day getting treatment on the hamstring, which repeatedly has been injured during the past two years of Griffy's career. However, one thing we know for a fact is that he will not play anymore spring training games.
