Broncos Romp Arizona to go 2-0
DENVER - Backup quarterback Brian Griese threw two touchdown passes, and the Dnever Broncos whipped the Arizona Cardinals. Starting quarterback Bubby Brister and running back Terrell
Davis also looked to be in regular season form for the Broncos, who outgained the Cardinals 448 yards to 161. The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Broncos overcame 17 penalties and the loss of two starters to injury. Tight end Shannon Sharpe and offensive guard Dan neil left the game in the second quarter with ankle and hip injuries. Although neither returned, the injuries weren't believed serious. Griese, who played from early in the second quarter until early in the fourth, completed 18 of 21 passes for 192 yards. On his second series, after Chris Watson's 36-yard punt return had given Denver possession at the Arizona 35, Grise completed a 19-yard pass to Byron Chamberlain and an 11-yarder to Chris Doering. He then hit fullback Detron Smith on a 1-yard scoring pass for a 17-0 lead late in the first half. Later, Griese completed eight passes during a 13-play, 79-yard drive culminating in his 13-yard TD throw to Chamberlain, who was disciplined earlier in the week for being overweight but reported for the game under the required 250 pounds ~ AP

FAREWELL ELWAY!
Not without tears and sorrow, John Elway, the 16 year veteran of the Denver Broncos, announced his retirement on May 2. Elway
decided to not return for a 17th season, saying his body cannot physically take another NFL season. This announcement ends talk about Elway becoming the first quarterback to win three straight Super Bowls. After his fifth Super Bowl appearence, a 34-19 win over the Atlanta Falcons, Elway was named Super Bowl MVP. Elway's retirement will mark the third sports superstar to withdrawl from his sport this year, following Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzkey. As Elway rides off in the sunset, as a World Champion, Bubby Brister will be Denver's signal-caller in 1999. Brister went 4-0 in 1998 when he started for Denver. For more on Brister, click here. Thanks for a lot John. ~Goofsta
BRONCOS USE FIRST PICK TO SELECT CHAMPION
Mike Shannahan used his first of eleven picks on Saturday to select a linebacker out of the National Champion Tennessee Volunteers. Al Wilson, a 5'11", 239 pound linebacker was selected to join the World Champions for the 1999-2000 season. The thirty-first pick of the draft will be a good addition to the Broncos franchise, and may add depth to the weak middle linebacker position. For a complete draft list for the Broncos, click here .
