The JAM

Welcome to The JAM Online (TJO), The JAM's home in cyberspace. Throughout its 16-year existence, The JAM has grown from a humble softball game played by a collection of recently-graduated high schoolers in Yonkers, New York, to a social phenomenon involving an annual softball game and Bar-B-Q, random sideshows highlighting everything from the sublime to the absurd, and various other JAM-related events throughout the year.

Each year a steadily increasing number of friends, acquaintances, spouses, business colleagues, professional athletes, progeny, foreign dignitaries, political and religious leaders, hard-hitting gangsta rappers and people we don't even know (at last count, 176) have experienced the growing legend of The JAM. Okay, all right, so some of that is a bold-faced lie. So far. We don't care about that. What we do care about is that The JAM continues to expand its legacy both now and well into the next millennium.

SEVENTH HEAVEN

Last-AB win is Blasters' seventh in a row; hit five home runs

YONKERS, N.Y. (June 28, 2008) -- They came from behind. They held off opposition rallies. And they're champions again.

Rebekah Goodhue drove in Trevor Wiessmann from second base with one out in the bottom of the 12th, and the Blasters defeated the Patches 16-15 in the Performance Enhancing JAM at Cook Field for their seventh consecutive championship.

The game was scheduled for 12 innings, but it would have become the first extra-inning JAM had it been set for nine. The Patches took an 11-8 lead in the top of the ninth, but the Blasters tied it, sparked by back-to-back homers by Kevin Gourdine and Mike Campoli, the second of the day for both. The Blasters scored four runs in the bottom of the 11th; the Patches rallied to tie it in the top of the 12th.

But two hits, around a lineout, set the stage for Goodhue's final heroics. She had been heroic earlier, throwing eight innings of relief that stymied the Patches' early offensive outburst.

The Patches scored in each of the first four innings and had an 8-4 lead before the Blasters rallied with four runs in the sixth.

Better than 'Good': She's MVJ

Pitching, clutch hitting wins it

Rebekah Goodhue and Kevin Gourdine Rebekah Goodhue (l) and Kevin Gourdine were top MVJ candidates at the Performance Enhancing JAM. Goodhue took home the trophy.   YONKERS, N.Y. (June 28, 2008) -- Rebekah Goodhue pitched eight strong innings of relief, then drove in the winning run in the Blasters' 16-15 win in the 2008 Performance Enhancing JAM. Her performance made her Most Valuable JAMmer.

Goodhue came on to pitch the fifth inning with the Blasters trailing 8-4. She didn't allow a run until the ninth; she had pitched to one over the minimum in her first four innings. She struck out two in eight innings.

She drove in Trevor Wiessmann from second base in the bottom of the 12th to end the game.

On a day when the teams combined for 67 hits, there were several strong MVJ candidates. Kevin Gourdine went 4-for-5 with two homers; Mike Campoli had a pair of homers and five RBIs. Had the Patches won, Brad Sherman's five RBIs might have made him the choice. Goodhue's all-around day made her the choice.

Jones wins Rookie of the Year

YONKERS, N.Y. (June 28, 2008) -- He may have been hitting 12th in the lineup, but Alex Jones added some pop for the Patches in Saturday's JAM.

Jones had RBI singles in the second and fourth innings, then drove in the tying run in the top of the 12th to earn JAM Rookie of the Year honors at Cook Field.

He is only the second Patch to win the award, which has been given annually since 2001.

Need a drink?

Try the JAMmie Dodger, the JAM's official cocktail

YONKERS, N.Y. (June 28, 2008) -- Jag Bath's "JAMmie Dodger" won a taste test Saturday night to become the first Official Cocktail of The JAM. The concoction beat out three other competitors for the title.

The JAMmie Dodger -- Malibu rum, white rum, pineapple and orange juices, plus nutmeg -- got high marks from the four-judge panel to earn the nod. Saturday's mix was missing the prescribed lime juice, but it won anyway.

The hoped-for finale of last year's "JAM's Strongest Man" competition didn't come off, because finalists Ed McDowell and R.T. McShane were both absent. They still need to arm wrestle to determine the champion.

Yes, them, again

YONKERS, N.Y. (June 28, 2008) -- Blasters mainstays Mike Campoli and captain Chris Crowley set a record Saturday, winning their seventh consecutive JAM championship. The pair, who are the only Blasters to play in every game during this historic streak, broke a tie that had included teammate Matt Fornabaio.

No other player has an active streak longer than George McShane's four in a row.

Fornabaio missed last year's JAM due to scheduling conflicts at work in Joliet, Ill. He has since moved to Shelton, Conn., and managed to show up Saturday and win with the Blasters. He has won the past seven JAMs in which he has competed, which ties Crowley and Campoli.

Ed, Soft?

YONKERS, N.Y. (June 28, 2008) -- JAM Commissioner Mike Campoli announced that Ed McDowell has been awarded the Steven R. Testa Soft Award for 2008.

McDowell, a 12-time JAMmer, was absent Saturday as the Blasters defeated the Patches.

Campoli considered giving the award to Joe Uzzi, who refused to abandon his platoon in Iraq and fly halfway around the world to attend The JAM. He went instead with McDowell, who spent the weekend leading a life of luxury in Brazil.

By missing The JAM, McDowell also avoided his much anticipated Strongest Man arm-wrestling showdown against R.T. McShane.

"Unbelievable: I get the Testa award for "ducking" a guy that wasn't even there?" McDowell said. "I would have been there if he was there (and by the way, given the fact that I was in first place after last year's event, and the strong Vegas line in my favor this year, I think we all know who the heavy favorite would have been). The white hegemony of the JAM voting committee rears its ugly head again."

The Testa Award is presented annually to the JAMmer who turns in the softest performance. It is represented by a bottle of L.A. Looks hair gel with the word "SOFT" across the bottom.

In its nine-year history, the dishonor has been awarded six times. All six have been for absences, fitting since the name commemorates the infamous haircut that kept Testa out of the 1998 JAM.

The namesake of the LORD TWON JAM CUP is former NBA player Antoine "Big Dog" Carr. The Cup was named for Carr because, simply, Antoine Carr is amazing. Some will remember our original URL, which still works, was http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/4255 -- think that #55 in the URL was just a coincidence?
