FLORIDA IS B(C)S CHAMPION!!

NFL RATINGS January 18, 2009(through conference championships).

See below where the final rankings are listed. I will update on Friday, including the final AP and Coaches Polls. But, my top 10 starts with Florida, followed by U.S.C., Texas, Utah and Oklahoma. Boise State finishes at 6, with T.C.U., Penn State, Alabama and Texas Tech rounding out the final top 10.

BOWL PICKS AND RESULTS

I finished an incredible 25-8-1 against the spread in bowl games, with 3-1 on my best picks!!!!

Ratings for

January 8, 2009(FINAL).

I pick all of the games against the spread, but these are my "official" picks:

Cotton -- Mississippi +4½ vs. Texas Tech

Sugar -- Utah +10 vs. Alabama

Music City Vanderbilt + 3½ vs. Boston College

Capital One -- Michigan State +7½ vs. Georgia

I know, I know -- 4 dogs. We'll see how I do. I am considering Colorado State and Florida Atlantic, as well. Many years, we have many favorites covering, and other years, plenty of underdogs cover.

NEW! NFL DIVISION/CONFERENCE RATINGS (December 28, 2008).

Here are the

BCS Ratings

for this week.

Here are the CONFERENCE RATINGS for this season.

Looks like these were the picks for December 6:

South Florida +7 at West Virginia

and to a lesser degree:

Virginia Tech PK vs. Boston College (at Tampa, FLA)

Naturally, I hit both of these games, as West Virginia won 13-7, and Virginia Tech defeated BC. I am now 13-3 against the line this season. But, go ahead and PAY those so-called experts, and ignore my FREE winning picks.

Two games I like this week:

Nevada +2 at Fresno State

Purdue +9½ at Michigan State

Maybe:

Iowa +7½ vs. Penn State

Here are the games to consider for last weekend: (I corrected typos on the lines to reflect the ACTUAL game time lines)

Baylor +14 at NEBRASKA

TENNESSEE +6 vs. Alabama

Rutgers +9½ at PITT

maybe:

N.C. State +11½ at MARYLAND

really maybe (not official):

CONNECTICUT (pk) vs. Cincinnati

At the bottom of the page, you will find the links to AP and Coaches polls, as well as Sagarin's computer rankings.

I was 3-1 against the spread last week, choosing Notre Dame, Michigan and Tennessee (correctly), and missing North Texas.

I liked Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee and North Texas (against the respective lines) for last week.

As many in the media have noted, the Southeastern Conference is, once again, at the top of the list; however, there are MAJOR trends that the press is not noticing, or deliberately not publicizing:

(1) The Pac 10's poor season -- while this has been talked about, the degree of demise is stunning. I have been using this rating system for almost 30 years, and over that time frame, the Pac 10 has been, along with the SEC, one of the top 2 conferences. I have never seen such a one-year plummet from a top league. I believe that the "USC factor" is real: the sheer domination of one or two teams in a league can have a detrimental effect on recruiting. While USC continues to get the top prospects, high school athletes may avoid other league schools, using the philosophy of "why bother"?

(2) The Big 12 is not far behind the SEC -- After a few down years, mainly driven by poor performances by the North schools, this league is as robust as it has ever been. The renaissance of the Northern teams has driven the rebound, as only Texas A&M in the South has been diminished while the North improves.

(3) The ACC is not down the toilet, but the Big East is -- early comments looked at the so-called "poor" ACC; in fact, the ACC has gotten better, while the Big East has fallen on bad times;

(4) The Mountain West is a BCS-worthy league -- just look at the ratings. It is time for the college football gurus to restructure who should or should not be included in the big money bowl games.

(5) The leagues are getting closer -- The MAC and Sun Belt have made strides over the last few years, and though they still are far behind the major leagues, the difference is gradually diminishing. Not only is the 85 scholarship rule having some effect, but I believe that the spread offense is the HUGE equalizer. It does not take 11 great athletes to run this system; rather, it takes a few skill position athletes, and good enough offensive linemen to create momentary gaps. No longer is there a need to have "hogs" up front in order to move the football. The more chances a "lesser" team has to score will lead to the increased importance of turnovers in deciding a game. If the more talented team has an off day, it can lose.
