On Wednesday, February 27, 2002, the Marshall University family suffered a tragic loss with the death of Dana Black. She was loved by her teammates, coaches, athletic staff and the entire University family. The Thundering Herd softball team has dedicated the 2002 season to the memory of their lost teammate.
2001...played in 56 games and started in 54 at shortstop....recorded seven multiple hit games....posted seven game hit streak....posted first hit of the season on Feb. 16 in a 1-for-3 outing against Georgia....went 2-for-3 versus Kentucky....went 4-for-4 with an RBI to propel Marshall past Liberty....went 2-for-3 versus Bowling Green....2-for-4 with an RBI versus Miami....swiped two bases versus Kent State while going 2-for-4....went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to help down Ohio on May 4.....fourth on Marshall squad in batting average, on base percentage, hits, runs batted in....second on team in stolen bases....committed 14 errors in 188 chances.....led team in assists
High School ... earned four letters for Gary Cronan at Alta Loma High School...served as captain her final three years of scholastic softball...named Most Valuable Player those same three seasons...was an all-conference selection 1998-00...was also named to the All-Inland Vallet squad as a junior and senior...played summer ball with American Pastime, Batbusters, Crunch and Firecrackers...member of Firecracker squad that were ASA National Champions in 1995...helped the Crunch place fourth in 1996 and seventh in 1997.
Personal ... born November 16, 1982 in Ranch Cucamonga, CA...daughter of Tom and Sue Black...major is criminal justice...named to Honor Roll all four years in high school.
DB, You've affected each of our lives in some way or another over the short period of time that we knew eachother. I can only hope that you would have said the same about us. We will carry you in our hearts forever and you will never die in us. May you rest in peace. God bless you!
