This game pits two teams heading in opposite directions. Yellowjackets were humbled last week by Escalon's vaunted running game and a stifling defense wich held them to just 61 yards. Huskies have won eight straight league games and need a win here to set up next week's titanic with Escalon. Prediction: Livingston

HUGHSON - The Hughson High School football team kept it Tran-Valley League title hopes alive and strong by remaining undefeated in league play after a 22-2 rou of TVL rival Hilmar, Friday night.
The Huskies' stingy defense held the offense, whil the explosive Hughson offense erupted for 312 yards.
"Our defense has played tough all year long." said Huskies' head coach Scott Ricardo. "The defense caused some key turnovers and really put the game out of reach for us."
Hughson (3-0 TVL, 5-2 overall) got its offense rolling early with an explosive opening drive.
Sophomore tailback Heath Villarreal broke runs of 30 and 44 yards on the first two plays of the game to move the Huskies down to the Hilmar 18 yard line.
After a short pass to James Norwood, Villarreal took the next two carries punching the second one into the endzone from one yard out.
The Yellowjackets (1-3 TVL, 3-4 overall) denied the Huskies any points when they blocked a field goal attempt and returned it to their own 45 yard line.
The two teams traded trunovers and punts until the last drive of the half, when Hughson took over the ball at its own 35 yard line.
The Huskies used 12 plays to move the ball down to Hilmar's two yard line with five seconds to go.
With the pressure on and Hughson poised to put the game away, the Yellowjackets' defense stepped up and stopped Kevin Barber on the one- inch line, giving them some confidence going into the half down by only six points.
"The kids expected to be up by more than we were at the half, but they didn't panic." said Ricardo. "That is a credit to them. They hung in there and got the job done."
Hilmar's offense looked to compile a drive and some confidence to start the second half. Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets. Ed Parmenter had other plans.
Parmenter intercepted an Elias Vega pass on the third play of the drive, giving Hughson control of the ball and the game.
Two plays later, however, Kyle Lemings returned the favor by throwing an interception to Vega on the second play of the drive.
After the interception, Hilmar's offense took over at its own 46 yard line and showed its first signs of life.
The Yellowjackets used 12 plays and a considerable amount of clock to march down to the Huskies' two yard line.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Hilmar took a gamble and went for the touchdown on fourth and goal from the two. Hughson's defense stood tall and made the stop.
The gamble was not all bad, as Barber was stoped in the end zone by the Yellowjackets' defense for a safety on the next play that brought the score to 6-2.
Hilmar fumbled the ball away on the second play of the next drive, but the Huskies gave the ball right back with an interception by Paul Pires.
The Yellowjackets were poised to come back, but again shot themselves in the foot with a costly turnover.
John Brazil fumbled on the first play of the drive. Leon Compton recovered the ball for Hughson and scampered 20 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 13-2.
Norwood recovered an onside kick for the Huskies' on the following kickoff, giving Hughson's offense excellent field position.
Five plays later, the Huskies settled for a 19 yard field goal from Jerry Chrisco.
On the third play of Hilmar's next drive, Villarreal intercepted a pass and set up Hughson's final score.
The Huskies needed six plays before Lemings hooked up with Colby Self for a four yard touchdown that was the final nail in Hilmar's coffin.
Despite the loss, Hilmar coach Jon Derr was encouraged by his team's grittiness.
"I have never been more proud of these players." said Derr.
Villarreal led Hughson's offense with 194 yards rushing on 23 carries, including a touchdown. Villarreal also came up with the key interception.
Defensively for the Huskies, Compton had a sack and a fumble return for a touchdown. Lucas Avila added two sacks.
For Hilmar's defense, Bobby Bielby had a sack and an interception.
"This wasn't a real solid win for us," said Ricardo. "We need to work on picking up inside blitzes more. You have to give credit to Hilmar, though. They were worthy opponent. Coach Derr did a great job of coaching those kids."
Hughson willl match up against league powerhouse Escalon next week in Escalon. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
The Yellowjackets will return home to battle Riverbank. Game time is also 7:30 p.m.

HUGHSON 22, HILMAR2, at Hughson - Leon Compton returned a fumble 19 yards for a score and Colby Self caught a 4 yard scoring pass from Kyle Lemings as the Huskies (5-2, 3-0) scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to pull qway from the Yellowjackets (3-4, 1-3).
Against Hilmar the Huskies came out smoking driving over 80 yards for a quick score. The Huskies kept rolling up the yards but couldn't quite do it in the red zone. Twice Hughson got within the 10 yard line and was denied a score.
Part of the Huskies problem was that soph tailback Heath Villarreal was sick. He was dizzy thru the second quarter. He was able to recover for the second half. Kyle Lemings was under pressure the whole night, and the Hilmar secondary did a good job of covering the Husky recievers.
Villarreal finished with 205 yards rushing on 23 carries, and scored a td, he added a key interception in the fourth quarter. Lemings finished the night with a 100 yards passing, and one td passing. Colby Self was held to 1 reception, but made it count for the last score of the game.
The Husky defense continues to keep the game close till the offense gets it going. The defense held the Yellowjackets to 73 yards of total offense. The big play for the defense was Leon Compton's fumble recovery return for a td. Compton also added a sack on the night for his nights work. Ed Parmenter added a interception, along with Villarreal's int. Lucas Avila had 2 sacks on the night, and had 8 solo tackles along with 7 assists.
The Husky offense needs to do a better job of protecting Lemings. Lemings was on the run all night long. There were quite a few missed blocks from both the line and backs. Once we get the blocking down the passing game will improve along with the running game. Of course Lemings already has 1075 yards passing in 7 games, while Heath Villarreal has already rushed for 808 yards, not bad at any level. Colby Self has 20 catches for 470 yards, and has drawn alot of coverage the last few weeks.
Next week is the game we all have been waiting for, Escalon. It should be a really good game. When making my picks for the Hughson Chronicle I was asked if I was picking with my heart or my head, because I again picked Hughson. Well I believe Hughson will win this game. Our defense is as good as any I've seen this year, including Oakdale's. And I know that Kyle Lemings is the best qb in the league. While even as a soph. Heath Villarreal is one of the 3 best backs in the league, and I think I'd still take him over Andy Gasper of Escalon, and Adam Heether of Ripon. We also have the best recievers in the league, 2 of them will be up for all-league this year. I don't think Escalon has the db's to cover our recieving corp, but will put a lot of pressure on Lemings with a fierce rush.
Expect a great game. See you there, and you'd better be early. |
