National Pencak Silat Championships

The National Pencak Silat Championships was held at Geylang West C.C., with the opening ceremony held on Sunday, 11th July '98. It was declared open by Member of Parliament for Geylang West, Mr. Peh Chin Hua. This year's Championship is set to be the biggest ever, with 257 competitors taking part in both Wiralaga (Sparring) and Wiraloka (Forms Competition).

Undefeated Champion's Absence

Sheikh Alauddin, the undefeated champion in Singapore, was absent from the competition, marking his transition from the competition arena to the coaching arena. He has already applied to be the next coach for the Singapore Pencak Silat National Team.
Sheikh Alauddin is well-known in Singapore for winning medals after medals in silat competitions in-country and overseas.

Five Heads are Better than Three

A notable difference in this competition is the implementation of 5, instead of 3, jurors during the bout. This is to ensure a more fair scoring system. It is unknown whether this will be implemented by the International Silat Federation (PERSILAT). If so, then all international competitions organized by PERSILAT will have 5 jurors. These include SEA Games and the World Championships.

On a Personal Note...

Personally, the Championships had been a disaster for me. I lost my bout with my opponent not because I was unprepared, but because I was starting to get sick that day. Nevertheless, I lost. And with that my hope to represent my country in any overseas competition is gone. Chances are, after my studies overseas I will no longer fight. I guess I can start coaching, if there's any vacancies available.
Oh well, perhaps it's for the better. Now to concentrate on my studies.
