Before the National Scholastic Outdoor Championships began, this was the
premiere high school invitational, along with the International Prep Inv. The Golden West
remains one of the most prestigious high school invitationals where future Olympians
have run. It is run as a finals only meet and by invitation only.
The Golden West began in 1961 and was held in Los Angeles, CA from 1961 through
1962 or 1963. Afterwards, it moved to Sacramento where it has been since then.
