The best
Arkansas player of all-time was, without a
doubt, Todd Day. The brash, trash-talking Day was a heavily recruited
high school player out
of Memphis, where he was Mr. Basketball in Tennessee. After Nolan
Richardson recruited Day, he became an instant success and went on to
become Arkansas all-time leading career scorer, not to mention my favorite
basketball player and athlete. Mr.Day brought a sense of
electricity and excitement to the basketball court that went unparalleled.
I will never forget when he scored 21 points in the first half against #1
and undefeated UNLV. Nor will I forget when he scored 39 points in the
SEC tournament against Alabama. Or
how about when Day casually came back
from suspension to score 35 points on 7-9 three-point shooting? What
about his career high 43 point performance in Baton Rouge against
Shaquille O'Neal and LSU? Day was All-SEC First Team as a senior and
All-SWC First Team as a sophomore and junior. As a junior he also set the
Arkansas single season points scoring record with 786, and was named SWC
tournament MVP. Day was also an All-American selection twice in his
career. Once as a junior and then again as a senior.
As a sophomore in the summer of 1990, Todd played along with Arkansas
teammate, Lee Mayberry, for the United States
team, featuring stars Billy Owens, Alonzo Mourning and Christian Laettner,
during the Goodwill Games.
With the abundance of offensive talent already on the team, the versatile
Day became known as the team's defensive stopper. He became famed
for his defensive performance in holding Brazilian star, Oscar Schmidt, to
just 9 points. This prompted Schmidt, who in a previous year had
scored 48 points to lead Brazil to a victory
over the Americans, to say "I've played against many players, but
this Day is tough defensively." Sporting News called Todd Day a
"Jack-Of-All-Trades"
and said, "Mr. Day is bright lights and big jumpers!". Day became the 8th
selection in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and was traded to
the Boston Celtics in 1995. He has had
difficulty adjusting to the slower pace of the NBA, but has still shown
flashes of brilliance. Such as in 1995 when he lighted up the Minnesota
Timberwolves for 41 points, including a Celtic-record tying 24 points in
the third quarter. Or in 1994 when he scored 101 points in a
span of three games, all Milwaukee victories, and received the
NBA Player of the Week honor. In just over three years at
Milwaukee, Todd re-wrote the Milwaukee record books in
three-point shooting. Hopefully, his professional career will pan out
and Day will show pro fans the extent of talent in his game. Over a 16
game stretch this season with the Celtics, Day averaged around 20 points
and 4.5 rebounds per game. This prompted Coach ML Carr to say, "The
emurgence of Todd's game has been
the most pleasant surprise for us this
season."
To
