The
record was formally held by New York Yankee Lou Gehrig.
Some say Lou Gehrig was the greatest first baseman ever
to play the game. He played every game from June 1, 1925
to May 2, 1939. His streak ended when a disease started
affecting the nerves that controlled his muscles. He died
of the illness - now known as the Lou Gehrig desease -
just two years later.
