Practice Five -- Diversity
Uses teaching and learning strategies that reflect each students' culture, learning styles, special needs, and socio-economic background.

The preprofessional teacher establishes a comfortable environment which accepts and fosters diversity.  The teacher must demonstrate knowledge and awareness of varied cultures and linguistic backgrounds.  The teacher creates a climate of openness, inquiry, and support by practicing strategies as acceptance, tolerance, resolution, and mediation.

5.1--University supervisor's assessment of studetn's ability to recognize diverse student needs, backgrounds, and linguistic differences in learning and treat K-12 students equitably and respectfully.
5.2--Cooperating teacher's assessment of student's ability to create and maintain a classroom climate that fosters pluralism while promoting learning for all students.

Types of assessment used in specific programs (as noted):
5.3--University faculty observation of student interactions with peers, staff, faculty, and school personnel who represent diverse cultures. (Agric, Health, Music, PE, Sp. Ed., Foreign Lang., Math)
5.4--Student-generated reports, projects, or poster session presentation involving analysis of influences of gender, cultural, socio-economic, learning style, special needs, or linguistic variables on teacher and student interactions or on learning environments. (Art, Health, Elementary, PE, Sp. Ed., Early Childhood, Foreign Lang., English, Science)
5.5--Logs or records of student participation in structured activities designed to promote interaction with individuals of diverse cultures or backgrounds. (Art, PE, Sp. Ed., Foreign Lang., Elementary)
5.6--Response to case study(ies) or assignments requiring adaptation of materials and learning activities to meet needs of students from diverse backgrounds, different learning styles, and special needs. (Agric., Health, PE, Sp. Ed., Elementary)
5.7--Responses to assignments requiring review and recommendations of curricular materials appropriate for and sensitive to needs of students from varied cultures and linguistic backgrounds. (Art, Health, PE, Sp. Ed., English)
