2000-01 LOOGOOTEE LIONS SCHEDULE

JAN.15th,JACK BUTCHER'S RECORDS 1957-2000,Thanks to C.Dunn.

DEC.30th,1999. Jack Butcher officially breaks record!.

REGULAR SEASON HIGHLIGHTS.

SUNDAY, NOV.12TH, I will be updating this page as time permits due to my father's illness. I want to thank all for your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Above is a link to the 2000-01, Lions schedule.
Sunday, March 19th: The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Director Roger Dickinson officially announced in a news release Friday, that two of Indiana's most prominent coaches, had many more victories atributed to them then was found to be accurate.
Howard Sharpe, went from 759, to 724. and Marion Crawley went from 735, to 644. As many of you know Howard's scorebooks had the score changed at the top of them from a loss by Gerstmeyer to a win. This was discovered by Bob Hammel who had been selected by the Hall of Fame, to look into officially clarifying the win totals situation.
Marion Crawley, it seems was given credit for over 90 victories earned as a junior varsity coach at Greencastle.
Two names that came out of this situation with totally accurate records were Jack Butcher, and Bill Stearman,(long time Columbus North coach). It has now been proven that Jack Butcher, really broke the record early in the 1997 season with his fourth victory.
I urge all Loogootee Lions fans to e-mail and write Hall of Fame Director Roger Dickinson for having the guts and character to stand on the side of truth and justice in this situation of having Historical Accuracy restored to the Hall!!
I also would like to state my opinion about this fiasco the IHSAA, calls a high school basketball tournament.
For Starters, how fair is it to send student athletes to Regional sites on a School night, many traveling 70 to over 100 miles away. How fair is it for a teams like Loogootee to go on another teams home floor, 2 days after winning Sectional, a floor you have no time to scrimmage on or acclimate yourselfs too!
And Bob Gardner and Co. said this was "the right thing to do, and is more fair" as he was quoted after they voted to continue this multi-class fiasco, last spring.
I attended a great Sectional, and a overflowing crowd at a weeknight Regional, by the way Loogootee fans are to be congratulated for sending 1500 strong to Lynnville, tues night. But generally the tournament is a failure, it's poorly attended, example Saturday at 3A Semi-State at Washington, I believe when Lance Mathias and myself walked into the Hatchet House that may have made it an even 3000,but no more! It was reported that only 5000, were in attendance at Hinkle for that colossal 4A Semi-State with Bloomington North,Jeffersonville, and New Castle.
Something in very wrong and it only got worse this year, rushing the tournament thru in three weeks. I for one believe there are only two ways to restore Hoosier Hysteria, and high school basketball to the prominence it once had here and throughout the country, either go back to traditional tournament or adopt a two class setup, both of these would substantially cut down on travel, and restore many rivalries.
On Tues, March 14th The Loogootee Lions lost a hard fought Regional title game to Tecumseh, 31-22. The Lions went into a very hostile enviroment, and fell behind early, as the Braves coasted to a 16-10, halftime lead, the Lion rallied to tie the game at 19 all late in the third, before Tecumseh fronted 21-19, leading into final quarter. The Lions who fought hard all night, couldn 't connect from the field at crucial times and hit only 9-31, for the game, for 29%. The Braves broke it open late at the free-throw line to defend their Regional Title.
The Lions were led in scoring by Ricky Lyon and Brett Bradley with 8 pts. Kevin Lannan who hit to key three's in third ended with 6pts.
This was the last game for Ricky Lyon, Josh Jeffers, Josh Fee, and Wes Walton, congrats on a great Senior year as the Lions finish 17-6, and Sectional Champions for the 24th time in School history.
LIONS CLASS A SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS 2000!!!!!
The Loogootee Lions won their own Sectional, with a big victory over the Vincennes Rivet Patriots, 57-33.
The Lions raced to a quick 16-3 lead mid-way through the first quarter, then withstood a rally by Rivet that cut the score to 16-9. The Lions then gathered themselves and adjusted to Rivet's swamping pressure, to cruise ahead 27-13, at the half.
The Lions kept up the pressure and withstood every defense Rivet could throw at them to open up a 37-22 third quarter advantage. The Lions were definitly smelling blood during fourth quarter as they broke the game completely wide open with a 20-11 advantage in fourth. The Lions played inspired defense both nights, and should be extremely proud of themselves claiming this Sectional Title, by shutting down both Barr-Reeve and Rivet's three point shooting weapons!!
Brett Bradley in yoman fashion, worked his butt off under the basket to lead the Lions with 20pts. Ricky Lyon played a great floor game to add 11pts. Josh Jeffers and Andrew Kluesner showing alot of poise added 10 a piece.GO LIONS BEAT DEFENDING CLASS A CHAMPION TECUMSEH
The Loogootee Lions won a huge thrilling victory again over Barr-Reeve in night cap at Loogootee Sectional, 33-31! The Lions got the tip off and held the ball against the Barr-Reeve 3-2 zone the ENTIRE FIRST QUARTER! Missed shot at end of quarter and it was 0-0!! after one quarter.
Barr-Reeve ended the drought with a two point bucket by Adam Traylor at the 6:20, mark in second. Lions stepped up defense and forced Barr-Reeve into numerous turnovers, and Lions surged ahead, 16-7 at the half.
In third Barr-Reeve went to a man late, and forced around an unbelievable 10 turnovers, on Lions in late third and early fourth. Barr-Reeve closed within 21-18, after three.
fourth. Barr-Reeve closed within 21-18, after three.
In fourth Lions clinged to a lead until 1:40, left, when Aaron Ash, hit an unbelievable three pointer, as he was fouled to surge the Vikings to a 30-29 lead!
The Lions on next possession throw the ball away, and foul Vikings with 1:00 left and they missed both free-throws! Lions went down worked ball for good shot, and Bradley hit a clutch bucket, with around :38, left, Lions up, 31-30.
Barr-Reeve goes down miss shot, Lions rebound, and worked ball until, 2.6 seconds left, when Lannan was fouled, he hit both clutch free-throws, Lions up, 33-30.
Barr-Reeve inbounds and gets ball deep in own territory, with 1.6 seconds left, and Ricky Lyon fouls Viking, beyond three before he can get into shooting position, at this time there is no time left , but buzzer hasn't sounded, Wirtz hits first free-throw, then misses second on purpose, and rebound goes into Lyon's hands, BUZZER SOUNDS, LIONS WIN! 33-31
Lions were led in scoring by, Josh Jeffers, who hit some clutch shots near the end! with 11. Brett Bradley followed with 10.WRZR player of the game, Kevin Lannan hit two big three's in first half, then two clutch freethrows late to score, 8pts. Ricky Lyon, and Andrew Kluesner, each scored 2pts. but did alot of good ballhandling and defense!
