2000 - A successful season but at a price.

The year 2000 was a successful season for Gwelup Croatia, Runers up in the Premier league and the OLA Social Cup. But a heavy price was paid in the last two games of the season. Tony Drago one of the best performers during the season was cut down in the first half of the match that would decide the Champion of the Premier League. The match against Moon & Sixpence was torrid affair, and we created some havoc amongst the Moon & Sixpence defenders with Tony Drago and Jurica Denona playing threatening soccer down the left flank. In a scoring position on the left hand edge of the 18 yard box Tony hit a beautiful drive for goal, only to be taken down by a very late tackle by the Moon & Sixpence defence. The result was a great save from Dave Roxby in the Moon & Sixpence goal and a total knee reconstruction for Tony Drago and six months of intensive rehabilitation.

Other injuries for the season included

Alen Zelich - another crude tackle in the match against Sorrento on the 25th of June. Alen was playing some terrific soccer and was really adding another dimension to the teams attacking flair. As his injury had not fully healed by the start of the new season Alen has decided to retire from the game and he will be sorely missed his team-mates.

Michele Martini - another victim of the last game of the season against Moon & Sixpence. Michele pulled a thigh muscle within the first minute of the game.

Frank Knezovic - Has undergone the knife to correct a problem with his knee. Hopefully he should be returning to playing duty 5 or 6 weeks into the season.

2000 Trophy Night

The 2000 Trophy night was another success with over 100 guests enjoying the food, music and atmosphere of a Gwelup Soccer function.

The Awards for the season were.

Runner Up Fairest and Best  Michele Martini
 Top Goalscorer  Jurica Denona
Best first year player  Damian Udall
 Best Club Man  Ivica Pecek

2001 - The start of a new era.

The year 2001 finds Gwelup changing direction. The club has moved out of the Premier Social Division and moved to the State Amateur League in the 4th Division. New players have arrived and a new major sponsor has appeared. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Gerry Forde from BGC Construction for the generous and timely support.

With two teams now in the competition Gwelup welcomes a host of new faces to the club. Results in the first three games of the 2001 season are very promising with good wins for both the League and Reserve Team. Both teams head their respective tables with maximum points. Lets hope that the boys can keep this tempo up for the entire Season.

A new committee has been formed and a former player Marko Cubelic has again become involved with the club. Marko will be in charge of catering and hospitality.

Gwelup Croatia through to the next round of the Mitre Cup !
