Black Diamond is back with a vengence.

After a two year absence from the hockey hobby, Black Diamond has returned stronger than ever. This year's product offers a ton of great stuff, 3 lower tier rookies (who aren't really even that low), 1 high tier rookie (who is very high) and 2 jerseys per box at least. The base set looks good and is a great one for collectors: the double diamonds are obtainable, the triples are a little tougher, and the rookies, while a challenge, aren't too bad since there are only about 7-10 one-per "high tier" rookie. It's a challenging set to build, but practical as well.

And while all that is guarenteed those feeling lucky will still have something to shoot for. In addition to two unnumbered jerseys in EVERY box there are bonus double, triple, and quad jerseys, all numbered and all will put you over the 2 per advertised. Every other box has signature gems, there are some much rarer /50 and /10 parallels, and of course, the holy grail of Black Diamond: those rookie buybacks (specifically the Thornton BGS 10 RC Redemption in there somewhere).

All that, and the box prices are only at $60 on D&A's

My box was quite an excellent box. I didn't get any signatures, but I did get a double diamond jersey of Frolov, which ended up giving me three jerseys in the box total. Aebischer, Frolov, and Svitov may not be the biggest names around, but they also don't have a lot of jersey cards out, so it's nice to pull them. I also loved pulling that Drury Triple (on the first pack no less!) and the rookies were excellent. The lower tiers worked well for me with Boyd Gordon and even Ehrhoff and McCormick have good potential. Patrice Bergeron is a bit of a disappointment as the 1:24 rookie: I had my sights set on Staal or Marc-Andre of course, but Bergeron is certainly nice as well (Beckett had him as one of the hot rookies last month, so it does work out).

Black Diamond is by far the best product I have seen in 2003-04. It's inexpensive, it's a fun break, you get some nice stuff out of it, and you can still hit it big. It's a challenging base set to buy, so multiple boxes don't end up getting repetitive with the same base cards over and over again ... Black Diamond is just pure quality on all levels.
