2001-02 Pacific Titanium

Breakdown

Packs per Box: 6
Cards per Pack: 5
Cards per Box: 30
Base Set Completion: 13.2% (19 of 144)
Duplicates: 0

First Pack

The exact contents of the first pack scanned in and used to find insert odds:

#43 Ed Belfour
#124 Teemu Selanne
#53 Brendan Shanahan Premiere Date Parallel (76/94)
Roman Cechmanek/Martin Havlat Dual Jersey
#90 Michael Peca

First Pack Comments: Pretty solid first pack, a dual of Cechmanek and Havlat, both pretty good names, and a parallel of Shananhan, a huge name. Not bad at all! (Note: I did NOT cherrypick this pack, however packs containing patch cards are ridiculously easy to cherrypick from this product, so beware of loose packs on eBay!)
First Pack Rating: 8.0 / 10

Titanium's second biggest problem is that it is only 6 packs deep. The biggest problem is the cherrypickability of the patch cards. The packs with patch cards are about twice as thick and even my cat could tell the difference, so please by very wary when purchasing these packs online. Sealed boxes are the best way to go!

This is a very solid product all-around. The dual jerseys come one per pack and are designed sufficently. It seems most of the jerseys are one color swatches ... in fact I don't recall ever seeing a two-color Titanium dual ... which is a bit of a let-down. The player selection is also pretty high: even if you end up with Rico Fata or Mark Bell jerseys, you can flip them over to seem very respectable Brian Leetch and Steve Sullivan jerseys. Pacific did a job job with its checklist to ensure that no card is a real dud on both sides.

But as far as a break goes, it's 30 total cards and lasts about 10 minutes. It's great while it lasts, but it's just over so fast you almost can't believe it.

Aside from that, Titanium has it all ... jerseys of course, two parallels per box, one dual patch per box, some decent enough inserts, and the home-run possibility of some of the most desirable rookies ever (1:13 boxes on average). Even if you don't hit a home run, you still have 5 dual jerseys and 1 dual patch ... it's hard to lose!

The selection in my box wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. Samsonov/Guerin was a nice pull, the Fata and Bell's were lame but at least they were accompanied by some more distinguished players, I really like the Francis/O'Neill, and the Turco/Morrison has a couple of nice looking swatches on it. Not great names, but not complete no-namers either. Shanny and Recchi were solid parallel pulls as well.

In the future, I think I would buy these boxes in pairs (two of them now cost about as much as a current Titanium box) ... if you fix the problem of it being over too quickly by buying twice as many, then the product is almost flawless. It's only six packs, but it is a six packs that is enjoyable and leaves you begging for more.
