Home to the 49ers -Five Time Super Bowl Champions


49er HISTORY:
The 49ers became charter members of the All-American Football Conference when it began in 1946. The team moved to the NFL in 1950. Won three straight Western Division Titles in 1970,1971,1972. Moved from Kezar Stadium to Candlestick Park in 1971. Edward J.DeBartlo Jr, became team owner in 1977. He hired Bill Walsh as head coach in 1979.The niners won their first league championship in 1982 by beating the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI.They won their 2nd championship in 1984 by drubbing the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVIII 38-16. Their third championship was won in Super Bowl XXIII with a last minute drive against the Cincinnati Bengals in a nail biter 20-16.Bill Walsh retired following the Super Bowl XVIII win and George Seifert was named head coach.He coached the niners to their fourth championship in his first year with a demolishing of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIX 55-10.Niners became the first team to win 5 Super Bowls by defeating the San Diego Chargers 49-26 in Super Bowl XIX.George Seifert steps down as the head coach after this Super Bowl and Steve Mariucci is named the new head coach for the 1997 season.He leads the niners to the championship game in just his first year as an NFL head coach. The niners lost the game to the Greeen Bay packers making three years in a row of losing to the Packers in the playoffs.

49er LEGENDS:

Although the 49ers did not win any division titles or championships until the 1970's they had some great players in their early years in the NFL.Such greats as Frankie Albert,Y.A.Tittle,Hugh Mcelhenny,Joe Perry,John Henry Johnson, Bob St.Clair and Leo Nomellini. Their championship years of the last decade produced the following legends to date: Joe Montana,Ronnie Lott,Dwight Clark and Roger Craig.Those destine to become part of the 49er legends upon retiring are Steve Young,Jerry Rice and Brent Jones.

49er HALL OF FAMERS:

The following players inducted into the Hall of Fame have played on 49er teams:Leo Nomellini,Joe Perry,Hugh McElhenny,Y.A.Tittle,John Henry Johnson,Bob St.Clair,Jimmy Johnson (not the coach either),O.J.Simpson and one previous coach has been inducted Bill Walsh.
