Meet the Editor of

Why is a Hockey Team Called the Devils?

My name is Terry Wirick. I live in Girard, PA, which is located west of Erie, PA.
I work at the Erie County Public Library as an Information Services Librarian.
The reason I'm writing this book is that I have been fascinated for a long time about the names of sports teams. I got the idea for this book from a similar book that dealt with the nicknames of college sports team called, 'What's in a Nickname' by Ray Frank. The first team that I was really curious about their name was the New Jersey Devils, which is the reason I have named the book Why is a Hockey Team Called the Devils. When I found out that the Devils were named after a mythical creature called the Jersey Devil, the name made perfect sense. There are a lot of names that seem strange until you find out the reason behind the name. Then, a lot of the time, the name makes perfect sense.

I have followed hockey in Erie since 1975 when the Erie Blades joined the North American Hockey League. I have been an Erie hockey season ticket holder since the 1989-90 season and had not missed an Erie hockey home game from January of 1988 to March of 2002, a streak of 549 games.
While hockey is my favorite sport, I do attend the games of the Erie minor league baseball teams and while they were in operation, games of the local World Basketball League team.
Between 1989 and 1996, I assisted the Erie Panthers of the East Coast Hockey League as Team Historian and Special Events Photographers. Pictures that I took during this time appeared in various editions of the Panthers program and were used for the Panthers pocket schedule.
For two seasons (93-95), I covered the Erie Panthers for Hockey Ink, a national monthly publication covering minor league hockey in North American. This publication ceased operations after the 1994-95 hockey season.
