Rich DuBOIS - The top senior high school basketball players from District 9 will compete in the inaugural Alice R. Kozel Foundation District 9 All-Star Game scheduled for Saturday, April 1, at the DuBois Area Middle School. Alice R. Kozel Foundation Chief Executive Officer and game host Larry Salone announced the all-star rosters for the senior-only game Friday. Forty-two players are participating. A girls' and boys' game are scheduled at 6 and 8 p.m. respectively. Three-point shooting contests will take place at halftime of each 40-minute game. Salone, who is also the junior varsity boys' coach at DuBois Area, is impressed with the level of response of not only area players and coaches, but business as well. "I'm pleased with the excitement level of the coaches, players and fans of District 9," Salone said. "It has been overwhelming seeing the support and interest this has generated. If you look at the rosters, this is truly the premier District 9 all-star event of the season." Players were chosen based on ballots submitted from District 9 coaches. The 42 players were then separated into four teams by the selection committee. Eleven players are on the roster for each boys' team. Coaching Team One are Kane's Rod Smith, North Clarion's Ryan Cornecki and Brookville's Randy Reitz. Coaching Team Two are DuBois Area's John Wayne, Punxsutawney's Bill Vassallo and St. Marys' John Barnhart. Making up Team One are First Baptist Academy's Barry Chamberlin, Brookville's Russ Goddard, Redbank Valley's Darren Duhnke, Kane's Derek Bruce, Clarion's Jeff Bruner and Brad Larson, Union's Dustin Laughlin, North Clarion's Mike Carr, Keystone's Chris Banner and Raoul Whitaker and Karns City's Rob Kusick. Team Two consists of DuBois Area's Shawn Hoover and Nick Hooten, Clearfield's Matt Rowles and Eric Johnson, Elk County Christian's Dave Dellaquila and Marty Timm, St. Marys' Adam Fox and L.J. Huggler, Cameron County's Shane Goss, Coudersport's Nate Jones and Bradford's Andy Middlebrough. For the girls, 10 players make up each team. Coaching Team One is Clearfield's Joey Castagnolo, Cameron County's Pat Lewis and Punxsutawney's Brad Constantino. Coaching Team Two is Union's Karen Davis, Brookville's Jon Benton and Redbank Valley's Dave Moore. Team One's roster consists of Clearfield's Jessica Porter and Amanda Swanson, Cameron County's Beth Summerson, Ridgway's Ashley Gardner, Coudersport's Erika Billings and Erica Simcoe, Port Allegany's Rae El Johnson, Punxsutawney's Kim Duke, Bradford's Sara Eddy and Northern Potter's Karen Thompson. Team Two's roster includes Central Christian's Sarah Osburn and Julie Taylor, Brookville's Amanda Morrison, Redbank Valley's Bree McDonald and Ashley Henry, Johnsonburg's Norine Scida, Union's Cara Booth and Jessica Divins, North Clarion's Jess Weaver and Austin's Marty Corey. A luncheon precedes the games at the Behind the Moon banquet hall in Falls Creek starting at 2 p.m. The Tri-County Sunday/Courier-Express will announce its inaugural All-District 9 Teams along with a boys' and girls' player of the year. While the all-star games feature seniors only, according to PIAA and NCAA regulations, the All-District 9 Teams will honor some underclassmen. At the games, there will be no admission charge, although there will be a donation attendant to accept donations for the Kozel Foundation, which is a non-profit organization chartered with the commitment to provide resources for children and youth throughout Western Pennsylvania.
