Steve won the Conn Smythe trophy as most valuable player of the 1998 Playoffs. Highly skilled. Tough. Relentless. Always hungry for a win. A true team leader. His teammates call him silk because there is nobody smoother on the ice. Drafted by the Red Wings in 1983, he was named top rookie by the Sporting News Magazine a scored club rookie records in both goals and total points. In 1986 Steve was named captain of the Red Wing team. At age 21 he was the youngest captain in Detroit team history. The 1988-89 Season was a mile-stone year for Steve. He set club records for goals, assists, and points and ranked third overall in the NHL in each category. He also became one of four players in NHL history to get 150 or more points he scored 65 goals that year and followed 62 in the 1989-90 season to become on of only six players in NHL history to accomplish this scoring feat. He was second in the NHL in goals scored that year. In 1993, Stevie Y joined the 1000 point club. The following season he scored his 500th career goal. becoming the 22nd player in NHL history to score that many goals. The 1996-97 season was a year of milestones for Steve. He played his 1000th career game he scored his 1300th career point and his 800th assist. His three point November effort against San Jose moved him up to on the all time Red Wings point list. But Stevie's most important of the 1997 season, or maybe his 15 year career was in the second playoff game against Colorado, when he skated behind the net and shoved it in off goalie Patrick Roy's leg. It was a turning point for the teams 42- year quest for the cup. leading his team to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, Stevie Y has earned a special place in Red Wings history and the hearts of hockey's greatest fans. Whatever off time Steve doesn't spend with his wife Lisa, and their two children, might be filled with an unannounced visit to the children's floor at a local hospital. |
