What Is Jujitsu

Many of the "Japanese" marital arts have their origins in Jujitsu.

Jujitsu can be defined as the art of grabbing, striking and throwing an aggressor so that the aggressor's own strength and mass are used against him or her.

Broken down into individual components Ju means gentleness or suppleness. Jitsu means art form. Therefore Jujitsu is the gentle art form, or the science of softness.

To accommodate this goal Jujitsu equally uses the following:

*  Throwing Techniques  - Using Kuzushi (turn an adversaries attacking force against him or her) to break an opponents balance and then to bring down the opponent with minimal force.

*  Joints Techniques - To nullify the force of an attacker using evasive movements and counter measures applied to the joints of the body, redirecting the force of the adversary back upon him or herself.

*  Choking Techniques - The application of pressure to the carotid arteries or windpipe resulting in loss of consciousness of the aggressor.

*  Kicking Techniques - Foot techniques (strikes) either straight out (Toma), medium (Ma), short (Chikama), applied to vulnerable parts of an aggressors body.

*  Punching Techniques - Hand techniques (open or closed fist) (strikes) either straight out (Toma), medium (Ma), short (Chikama), applied to vulnerable parts of an aggressors body. Included in this category are knife hand strikes and finger gouges.

*  Blocking TechniquesThe use of movements and counter measures applied using the arms and legs to redirect the force of an aggressors strike.

Jujitsu is mostly about developing a mind body relationship.

"The development of a harmonious relationship between the physical and mental being, thus contributing to an individual's successful participation in society and his / her general education."
