CALDER MEMORIAL TROPHY
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Calder TrophyThe CALDER MEMORIAL TROPHY is an annual award to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

From 1936-37 until his death in 1943, Frank Calder, NHL President, bought a trophy each year to be given permanently to the outstanding rookie. After Calder's death, the NHL presented the Calder Memorial Trophy in his memory and the trophy is to be kept in perpetuity.

To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. The player must not be older than 26 years before September 15th of the season in which he is eligible.

LADY BYNG MEMORIAL TROPHY
MOST GENTLEMANLY AND SPORTSMANLIKE PLAYER

Lady Byng Memorial TrophyThe LADY BYNG MEMORIAL TROPHY is an annual award to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with ahigh standard of playing ability. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

Lady Byng, wife of Canada's Governor-General at the time, presented the Lady Byng trophy in 1925. After FrankBoucher of the New York Rangers won the award seven times in eight seasons, he was given the trophy to keep and Lady Byng donated another trophy in 1936.

After Lady Byng's death in 1949, the National Hockey League presented a new trophy, changing the name to Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.

LESTER PATRICK TROPHY
INDIVIDUALS PROVIDING MOST VALUABLE SERVICE TO HOCKEY IN THE USA SERVICE

Lester Patrick TrophyThe LESTER PATRICK TROPHY is an annual award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. Eligible recipients are players, officials, coaches, executives, and referees. The winner is selected by an award committee consisting of:

  • the President of the NHL
  • an NHL Governor
  • a representative of the New York Rangers
  • a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Builder's section
  • a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Player's section
  • a member of the U. S. Hockey Hall of Fame,
  • a member of the NHL Broadcasters' Association
  • a member of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association

Except the NHL President, each member is rotated annually. The winner(s) receive a miniature of the trophy. The Patrick Trophy was presented by the New York Rangers in 1966 to honor the late Lester Patrick. Patrick was a longtime general manager and coach of the Rangers, whose teams finished out of the playoffs only once in his first 16 years with the club.

KING CLANCY MEMORIAL TROPHY
PLAYERS MOST EXEMPLIFYING LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

Clancy TrophyThe KING CLANCY MEMORIAL TROPHY is an annual award to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.

The King Clancy Memorial Trophy was presented to the National Hockey League by the Board of Governors in 1988 to honour the late Francis "King" Clancy, and his long and distinguished career in hockey as a player, official, coach, and executive.

ART ROSS TROPHY

Art Ross TrophyThe ART ROSS TROPHY is an annual award to the player who leads the league in scoring points at the end of the regular season. Arthur Howie Ross, former manager-coach of the Boston Bruins, presented the trophy to the National Hockey League in 1947.

If two players finish the season with the same number of points, the trophy is awarded in the following manner:

  1. Player with most goals
  2. Player with fewer games played
  3. Player scoring first goal of the season

BILL MASTERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY
PLAYER MOST EXEMPLIFYING PERSEVERANCE AND DEDICATION

Bill Masterton Memorial TrophyThe BILL MASTERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY is an annual award under the trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. The winner is selected in a poll of all chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season.

A grant from the PHWA is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, MN, in the name of the Masterton Trophy winner.

The trophy was presented by the NHL Writers' Association in 1968 to commemorate the late William Masterton, a player of the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. Masterton died on January 15, 1968, after an injury sustained during a hockey game.

Clarence Campbell BowlThe CLARENCE S. CAMPBELL BOWL was presented by the member clubs in 1968 for perpetual competition by the National Hockey League in recognition of the services of Clarence S. Campbell, President of the NHL from 1946 to 1977.

From 1967-68 through 1973-74, the trophy was awarded to the champions of the West Division. From 1981-1982 to 1992-93 the trophy was presented to the playoff champion in the Campbell Conference. Since 1993-94, the trophy has been presented to the playoff champion in the Western Conference.

Beginning with the 1993-94 season, the club which advances to the Stanley Cup finals as the winner of the Western Conference Championship is presented with the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl.

The trophy itself is a hallmark piece made of sterling silver and was crafted by a British silversmith in 1878.

FRANK J. SELKE TROPHY
BEST DEFENSIVE FORWARDS

Frank J. Selke TrophyThe FRANK J. SELKE TROPHY is an annual award to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

The Selke Trophy was presented to the National Hockey League in 1977 by the Board of Governors of the NHL in honor of Frank J. Selke, one of the great architects of NHL championship teams.

HART MEMORIAL TROPHY
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER OVERALL

Hart Memorial TrophyThe HART MEMORIAL TROPHY is an annual award to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in all NHL cities at the end of the regular season.

The Hart Memorial Trophy was presented by the National Hockey League in 1960 after the original Hart Trophy was retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The original Hart Trophy was donated to the NHL in 1923 by Dr. David A. Hart, father of Cecil Hart, former manager-coach ofthe Montreal Canadiens.

JACK ADAMS AWARD
COACH OF THE YEAR

Jack Adams TrophyThe JACK ADAMS AWARD is an annual award presented by the National Hockey League Broadcasters' Association to the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team's success. The winner is selected in a poll among members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association at the end of the regular season.

The award was presented by the NHL Broadcasters' Association in 1974 to commemorate the late Jack Adams, former coach and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. His lifetime dedication to hockey has served as an inspiration to all who aspire to further the game.

JAMES NORRIS MEMORIAL TROPHY
OUTSTANDING DEFENSEMAN

James Norris Memorial TrophyThe JAMES NORRIS MEMORIAL TROPHY is an annual award to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

The James Norris Memorial Trophy was presented in 1953 by the four children of the late James Norris in memory of the former owner-president of the Detroit Red Wings.

LESTER B. PEARSON AWARD
OUTSTANDING PLAYERS SELECTED BY NHL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION

Lester B. Pearson AwardThe LESTER B. PEARSON AWARD is an annual award presented to the National Hockey League's outstanding player as selected by the members of the NHL Players' Association.

The award was presented in 1970-71 by the NHLPA in honor of the late Lester B. Pearson, former Prime Minister of Canada.

PRESIDENTS' TROPHY

Presidents' TrophyThe PRESIDENTS' TROPHY is an annual award presented to the team which finishes the NHL Regular Season with the best overall record.

Presented to the National Hockey League in 1985-86 by the NHL Board of Governors to recognize the team compiling the top regular-season record..

PRINCE OF WALES TROPHY

Prince of Wales TrophyHis Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, donated the PRINCE OF WALES TROPHY to the National Hockey League in 1924. From 1927-28 through 1937-38, the award was presented to the team finishing first in the American Division of the NHL. From 1938-39, when the NHL reverted to one section, to 1966-67, it was presented to the team finishing first in the NHL regular season.

With expansion in 1967-68, it again became a divisional trophy through the 1973-74 season. Beginning in 1974-75, it was awarded tothe regular-season winner of the conference bearing the name of the trophy. Starting with the 1981-82 season, the trophy was presented to the playoff champion in the Wales Conference.

Beginning with the 1993-94 season, the club which advances to the Stanley Cup finals as the winner of the Eastern Conference Champion is presented with the Prince of Wales Trophy.

Vezina TrophyThe VEZINA TROPHY is an annual award to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at this position as voted by the general managers of all NHL clubs.

Leo Dandurand, Louis Letourneau, and Joe Cattarinich, former owners of the Montreal Canadiens, presented the trophy to the National Hockey League in 1926-27 in memory of Georges Vezina, outstanding goalkeeper of the Canadiens, who collapsed during an NHL game November 28, 1925, and died of tuberculosis a few months later.

Until the 1981-82 season, the goalkeeper(s) of the team allowing the fewest number of goals during the regular season were awarded the Vezina Trophy.

WILLIAM M. JENNINGS MEMORIAL TROPHY
TEAMS /GOALTENDERS ALLOWING THE FEWEST GOALS

William M. Jennings TrophyThe WILLIAM M. JENNINGS TROPHY is an annual award to the goalkeeper(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it. Winners are selected based on regular-season play. The Jennings Trophy was presented in 1981-82 by the National Hockey League's Board of Governors to honor the late William M. Jennings, longtime governor and president of the New York Rangers and one of the great builders of hockey in the United States.

STANLEY CUP
NHL PLAYOFF CHAMPION

Stanley CupThe STANLEY CUP, the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, was donated in 1892 by Sir Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby. He purchased the trophy for 10 Guineas ($50.00 at that time) to be presented to "the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada."

Since 1910, when the National Hockey Association took possession of the Stanley Cup, the trophy has been symbolic of professional hockey supremacy and has been competed for only by NHL teams since 1926.

Original Stanley CupIn 1946, the NHL took exclusive control of the Stanley Cup and there have been numerous alterations to the Cup structure. Because the Cup is the only professional sports trophy where the name of every member of the winning team is inscribed, bands are often retired to make room for new champions. Retired bands, along with the original Stanley Cup bowl, are proudly displayed in Lord Stanley’s Vault in the Bell Great Hall.
