What's a Sports Night?
Back in the
"ancient days" of the 50's, there were
limited if any sports for the girls. To fill the gap for them,
the concept of
Sports Night was created not just at MHHS
but throughout the
state. At MH there were 2 teams, Scarlet and White with 2
captains. There was a theme, with scenery, costumes(also take note of
the "gymsuits" at the beginning of the show), and props. Some
of the squads that girls could participate in were Tap, Danish, and
Tumbling, along with a narrator. In the 70's and 80's, Ms.
Malvano and Ms. Mason were
the advisors.
With the building of the Mall,
meaning girls going to work, and the
advent of girls athletics, the activity was curtailed in the early 80's
due to low numbers able to participate. At it's inception, girls
had to participate as part of their PE grade.
Below is
video posted on line by a
participant in the 1974 version of
this legendary event that would run for 3 days. The house would
be packed and the memorable march, that would be associated not only
with Monty Python, but with sports night, would be played to usher in
the 2 teams.
School Spirit like this will never be seen
in the halls of MH again.....
