[*] AutoBoot 1.6
|
AutoBoot version 1.6
Are you running a Web server, BBS, kiosk, file server or any other kind of
server ? Do you use a remote access package (Timbuktu, ARA, ...) or do you
use your Mac for receiving faxes ? Do you depend on your Mac being
available all the time ? Unfortunately, your Mac is not always as reliable
as it should be. Crashes and system freezes can make your life a horror.
Have a look at AutoBoot. AutoBoot is a Control Panel which will restart
your Macintosh after a System Error or a Freeze-Up has occurred. AutoBoot
ensures maximal availability of unattended Macs.
As many users can testify, AutoBoot can be a real life saver. No Mac server
should be without it !
Version 1.6 changes: AutoBoot 1.6 is now compatible with 0S 7.6.1 and OS 8
and has a new "restart after power failure" feature. All shareware fees
are now processed by Kagi, which should make registration much easier.
AutoBoot is $22 shareware

[*] ClockWork 1.0b2 68K - Day Planner for MacOS and Newton
|
Century Software (www.centsoft.com) announces the third preview release
of ClockWork, its advanced day planner for MacOS and Newton. A final
release is scheduled for September 97.
ClockWork is easy to use, offers powerful functionality and supports a
wide range of Apple technologies. It stands out from the crowd by
implementing unique features such as voice annotations, Text-to-Speech
support, Auto-Power-On for PowerMacs, automatic calculation of
international holidays and tight integration with the MacOS and Newton
operating systems.
ClockWork supports shared schedules allowing a team of MacOS users to

[*] Synchronize! 3.5.3 - Mac File Sync and Backup
|
This is Synchronize! 3.5.3, a file synchronization utility fully compatible
for Mac OS 8. As an introduction to Synchronize!, you may use its basic
file synchronization and backup features FREE. Decompress this
self-extracting archive and try it out. The many advanced features of the
program may be demonstrated with folders which contain less than 1 MB.
Unlimited use of the advanced features requires the purchase of the
program, which is $29.95, plus shipping.
As an example, you can use Synchronize! to connect to a remote network with
AppleTalk Remote Access, log on to a file server, synchronize or backup
some files, log off the file server, disconnect ARA, and put a PowerBook to
sleep or shut down your Mac. All this can be scheduled to happen at night
or at any preset time, once or peridically, without anyone present.
Synchronize! is a great way to keep your work-in-process backed up on a
second hard drive or a removable drive. Set it to copy those important
files at lunch, or the end of the day, and you're always safe from a hard
disk failure. Synchronize! is quick, too, because it copies only the files
which have changed.
Features include:
> Accelerated for Power Mac.
> Apple Guide - step by step instructions (System 7.5 only)
> Drag and drop - set folders by dragging from the desktop (System 7.5 only)
> Hierarchical display of files to be copied, like the Finder
> Selection of files or folders, by full or partial file name, file type,
>creator, and label.
> Easy one-way backup, with deletion of old files
> Copy AutoDoubler files without expanding them
> Conflict checking
> Synchronization of deleted files
> Use aliases to group certain files and folders to sync
> Optional verification
> Automatic synchronization at any time, once or periodically
> Launch Synchronize! automatically, when sync is needed
> Automatic connection to server disks, using File Sharing or AppleShare
> Automatic entry of Remote Access and server passwords, so you don't have
>to be there to enter them
> Automatic unmounting of remote disks AppleTalk Remote Access
> Automatic shutdown or sleep when done
> AppleScript support
> FREE Upgrades, when downloaded from an online service

ZipIt is a Macintosh program to zip and unzip files. It can be used in much
the same way as other popular Macintosh compression programs are used, such

any platform, including the Macintosh, without loss of information. Version
1.3.8 fixes a bug in password-protection of archives, and introduces the
ability for all users to protect their archives with passwords. Version
1..37 added a number of new features, including enhanced segmenting and
AppleScript support.

The Text Encoding Converter (TEC) is the first implementation of Unicode
support in the MacOS. Unicode is a standard for displaying text in
different language systems. A few components of the MacOS rely on TEC to
make sure they're handling text in the proper manner. Macintosh Runtime
for Java and Cyberdog are two applications that use TEC extensively for
enabling Unicode support. More and more applications are starting to use
TEC to handle the complex Unicode issue. The separate Text Encoding
files are the Unicode representations and other info for foreign
languages.
> 2) I found, relative to 7.6, that there was a noticeable delay in the

I think Apple knows about this and is trying to improve it under MacOS
8.0.1 (to ship later this fall). I believe that MacOS 8 first draws the
contents of a window to an off-screen buffer and then blasts that onto
the screen. Even though the window draw is slower, the Finder is
multi-threaded so you can do other things while the window is updating.
For the first release of the multi-threaded Finder, Apple was targeting
UI responsiveness over performance. I assume they'll tune that over
time. I don't know of any way to speed up the window drawing process.
However, if you read the Apple TechNote about MacOS 8, you'll find a
section about how the Finder draws windows and an urging suggestion from
Apple to video driver writers to support GWorlds where the Finder does a
good amount of off-screen drawing.
Hope this helps!

Here's a great trick if you still have a System 7.x partition.
Boot into System 7.x and set your view options like you want (turn off the
date, etc.). Now, once you've set the options take your view preferences
file (is that the Finder Prefs?) and drag it into your OS 8 pref folder.
This seems to work.

Highly recommend you turn VM ON and set it at the minimum (e.g. 49M)

A DVA-4000 for Macintosh problem

The folks at videologic have told me that they don't support the DVA-4000

have any later version of the software/drivers so I can hook this little

Does this matter? Can Motorola still sell CHRP machines and just buy Mac OS

CHRP machines still require ROMs from Apple?

(For the whole memo link to http://www8.zdnet.com/macweek/mw_1134/nw_memo.html)
I posted the following in the last digest:
<<
Since installing OS 8 a strange thing happens once or twice each session.
When I click on an icon (disk icon in the Finder, or a folder icon) all
windows and desktop icons disappear and everything comes to a stop until I
click on the icon again. Then the windows reopen and the icons reappear and
everything's fine again. The Apple Support rep suggests that there's a cdev
or init conflict, but finding it would take forever. I don't have Conflict
Catcher, but I'm not sure if it would identify this particular situation.
Has anyone else experienced this?
<<
I am happy to report that the solution was to eliminate all NOW Utilities
files. The NOW Utilities web site <http://www.nowutilities.com/os8.html>
says:
"At this time, the award-winning Now Utilities is not fully compatible
with the recent OS 8 release. Currently we are focusing all of our
engineering efforts on the release of our cross-platform group
scheduling software. Upon the release of our group scheduling software,
currently expected in Q4 of this year, we will assess the resources
needed to develop a version of Now Utilities for System 8.0. In the
meantime, we recommend that you do not install Now Utilities with OS 8
or if you do, that you do so at your own risk. We regret any inconvenience
this process may cause, and warmly thank you for your continued interest
and patience."
Since ridding my system of all NOW files, the problem went away.

Hi all,
I'd like to get my dad's old SE/30 set up so it can perform such basic
Internet tasks as email and a very limited amount of web browsing. It's
running System 7.1, has 5 MB of RAM, and a 40MB HD thats mostly full.
What I need to know is: What is the equivalent of Open Transport for Sys
7.1? I think its some file like MacTCP, but I have no experience with
anything but OT. Also, where would I find these files?
I'm thinking Netscape 1.1 would be sufficient for the web browsing part,
and probably Eudora Lite 1.5 or so for the email. Are there better
software packages available given the constraints of his system?
Thanks,
Erik Hjelle

Memory use in OS 8
|
I installed OS 8 both on a PowerPC 6200 and a PowerBook 5300c. Just after
installation of OS 8 and the Japanese Language Kit (no third party
extensions!), I checked the System RAM usage. On the desktop computer, the
System was using 12 MB and the PowerBook was using 18 MB. Since the
PowerBook "only" has 40 MB of RAM, I disabled as many extensions as
possible to trim it back to about 12 MB. The thing that I don't understand
is why the 6200 uses so much less RAM with everything enabled.
Any advice or ideas?
FYI-The memory settings were at their default settings (96k? with Virtual
Memory on). I did turn virtual memory off and set the cache at 1024 for
both computers to increase speed. The Memory settings were identical on
both computers when I checked the RAM use.

You can try to use Silverlining or HardDisk Toolkit. But since you can't
mount it now and want to recover files from it...
- Did you properly terminate your SCSI bus? This may be the problem that
SCSI Probe can't mount it.
- Did you update your system software since you had connected the disk
the last time? If so, the newer system may not want to work with the old
driver on the disk.
- Can you start up using a disk tools floppy and then "see" the disk?
Try to turn the disk on before or after you turn on the computer,
sometimes this makes a difference.
Good luck, Christian.

PLS HELP ME: AUTO DOUBLER + OS 8 MEANS TROUBLE!! PLS HELP
|
Call me ignorant, call me whatever you like, BUT, I am still in trouble.
I upgraded to OS8 and had AutoDoubler on my machine. Now all my icons look
like Disk Doubler icons. I have to expand everything before I can use it.
Can somebody give me a good solution? Is there a bug fix or is there a way
I can move to a different peice of software without having to expand my
whole hard drive and then moving to something else?
Pls help! thanx.

Hi all,
I got a request from a friend that I thought I'd post here to see if you
guys had any ideas. This is quoted from his email:

Please send any ideas to me, and I'll forward them to him.

I have a problem printing with an HP Deskwriter and a PowerMac 6100/60.
I've tried every possibility (Appletalk config., chooser settings, etc.)
and I still can't print anything. Everything was fine with my old IIci but
now nothing works.
I have a PM 6100/60 with 24 Meg of RAM running system 7.5.5 along with Open
Transport. The printer is the standard Deskwriter.
Help me - please!! Send me email to the address below.

GraphicConverter 2.9.1 can do this.

The internal harddiskj of a Performa 5400 is an IDE drive, not a SCSI
drive. Therefore you need to use a utility that supports IDE drives.
DiskManager Mac v. 4.01 supports IDE drives; don't know about FWB
HardDisk Toolkit.
Best wishes, Christian.

Thunder 7

Thunder 7 has been bought by Casady & Greene
(http://www.casadyg.com/C&G/welcome2.html) and they have upgraded it and
renamed it to Spell Catcher. There is an upgrade program, which I have
used, and I really like the improvements. This is one of those pieces of
software that I end up using every day.

WriteNow and new Adobe Type Manager?
|
Hi.
I received a new version of Adobe Type Manager when I upgraded Acrobat
Reader. The instructions that came with ATM stated that there was a
problem regarding ATM and WriteNow. Does anybody know of a fix for
this problem?
Thanks.
