The House of Prime

Few athletes in the world today are as well-known as Deion Sanders. Few can match his grace, his skill, or his flair for the dramatic. He brings a level of showmanship to his work that would make Don King blush. In a world where athletes are encouraged to sacrifice their individuality and just be "part of the team," Sanders, often referred to as "Prime Time," for his clutch performances, has managed to stand out as a unique personality and still achieve success.

Sanders is most famous for being one of the rare athletes who are capable of excelling in more than one sport. A two-time Super Bowl winner in the NFL, he's also starred in Major League Baseball, leading the National League in triples in 1993. In 1992, he played a playoff baseball game in Pittsburgh, then took a charter jet to Miami to aid his football teammates, then returned to Pittsburgh to play in the next night's baseball game. Three games, two sports, several thousand miles, and almost no sleep, all in less than 24 hours. Is there any question as to who's the hardest working man in sports?

For those of you who have never seen Deion Sanders play football, you're missing more than the best coverage player in NFL history. You're missing an entertainer, a true ham on the level of Jim Carrey. Sanders dances before, during, and after good plays. As he prances down the field, he'll place one hand behind his head, hold the ball outstretched in the other, and high-step his way into the endzone, where he'll break out into a shuffle worthy of James Brown.

I first saw Deion Sanders play when I was 14. Like many 14-year-old boys, I was suffering through a severe bout of depression. It was 1990, and Sanders was playing for the Atlanta Falcons against the Houston Oilers. Late in the game, when it looked like the Oilers were about to score, Sanders picked off a Warren Moon pass and immediately began highstepping down the sideline for a score. It occured to me that this guy seemed to be enjoying himself all the time. I thought to myself, "Now if this guy's so happy, then how bad can life be?" And, slowly, I came out of my depression. I taught myself to celebrate the little things in life, to try hard in everything you do, but mostly, to try and have a good time.
