Steve finished the season
22nd overall in scoring, despite missing 7 full games. He was 11th in assists,
and finished with a positive looking +3. He was 5th in faceoff win percentages
overall.
-
Steve dropped his time in
the penalty box this year, going from 78 PIMs in the box last year, to
only 46 PIMs this year. His shot percentage also increased from 9.48% to
12.8%.
-
Steve's goal production has
risen, from 22 goals in 81 games, to 24 goals in 75 games.
-
On the team, he was 1st in
points and assists, and was 3rd in goals. He also had the greatest percentage
of faceoffs won, and was 3rd on the team in takeaways.
-
Because of Steve's slow production
in the first half of the season, he was held off the North American all-star
team, but he rebounded in the second half of the season, with an incredible
26 points(11 g, 15 a) in 19 games, only Jaromir Jagr and Zigmund Palffy
having more points in that span.
-
When the Hockey
News rated its top
50 players of all time, Stevie wasn't included in the list. Th list
was voted on April 1997, 2 months before Stevie won his 1st Stanley Cup.
He was one of the 86 candidates.
-
It was a disappointing period
in Nagano, as Team
Canada failed to bring home a medal, after losing to the Czech Republic
in the semifinals and then to the Finns in the bronze medal match.

Stevie won his second stanley
cup on June 16th, 1998, just 374 days after winning his first on June 7th,
1997. He's a two-time champion, just like Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux.
-
He was unanimously voted
Conn Smythe winner as playoff MVP. He was 1st overall in goals and assists.
-
Although the Wings won at
the MCI Center in Washington this time, and there wasn't as big a celebration,
this was just as special as in 1997.
