This sort of result should have you going 'yeeeeeeeee' and 'haaaaaaaaa', that it did not says all you need to know about the resistance of Welshpool and about the nature of the day. There were no lowering skies, nor were the clouds dark and pendulous, but the weather did change from nice to bollocks as we set sail from Lampeter to Aberystwyth. And it got colder. I didn't feel a mug for thinking 'Oh, I won't need a jacket,' no, really, I didn't.
Welshpool, who the programme said would wear read, were down before the start of this match and made a few changes to their team line up. Aber were entirely unchanged and wore black arm bands in memory of one of the regulars here at Park Avenue. If it's the man I think it is, then he will be missed. Before the match we voted on Player of the Season, Tomsky and Andy voted for Gavin Allen on the grounds that the Shed don't like him instead of for Stew in goal on the grounds that he has been out best, and most consistent, player. Dave voted for Hayden Fleming but then that's Dave for you. Bizarrely, none of us voted for Dai Parry who has been in the team all year. And some people still don't know why Aber have struggled even when the answer is staring them in the face.
I haven't bothered to mark the minutes of the goals in my programme. The first, via the fluffed shot of Fleming, came early on and the 'keeper, Wayne Griffiths, would have stopped it if it'd been hit right. Glyn got a second before half time with a strong shot but in between not much had happened and Welshpool were certainly not involved. After the break, things carried on as before only this time with intermittent rain. Griff made it 3-0 before Glyn bammed in his second. He got his hat-trick when the entire Aber attack helped out to conspire to make it that even he couldn't miss from a millimetre out.
The bad news of the day was the injury to Gavin Allen. Seemingly stumbling following a minor tackle he writhed on the floor in agony and the referee immediately stopped play. Players from both sides crowded around him as his leg was looked at and bound and he was wheeled off on a stretcher with Meirion Appleton looking on concerned. Ryan Nicholls came on to replace him but being injured himself did not contribute much to the day.
This was Aber's last home fixture, after this they are away at Newtown and TNS before going to Caersws to play TNS in a Central Wales Floodlit Party Final. For Welshpool, this was their last LoW match, a stint in the league which began to Park Avenue at the beginning of last season. The programme made great play of this and even managed to conjure up the forgotten names of Will Tranter and Mike Turner who wore the old black and green that day. Mike Turner, eh? Wonder where he is now ...
