ABERYSTWYTH TOWN
A Brief History

Those of you who are regular Aber away supporters will recognise this. Although I have added a couple bits to this, it is essentially "borrowed" from one of the away programmes. Enjoy!

The 'Black & Greens' officially, came into being in 1884, despite evidence of football being played in the town at a much earlier date.

The first highpoint was winning the Welsh Cup in 1900 - the only time for a Mid-Wales club to capture the trophy until Llansantffraid's triumph last season. The club became a dominant force in Mid-Wales football, as well as winning the Welsh amateur cup on three occasions in the late 20's and early '30s, mainly dueto the legendary half backs of Sankey, Richards and Caul.

From 1949 to 1963 the club played in the Welsh League attracting regular crowds of over 3000 to Coedlan Y Parc (Park Avenue), but financial constraints forced a return to Mid-Wales football, culminating in another Welsh amateur cup triumph in 1970, as well as a double Welsh Intermediate Cup triumph in the 1980's under present manager Meirion Appleton. Oh for the glory days, eh?

In 1988 the club entered the Abacus League, bringing a number of new exciting players to Coedlan y Parc. The club were runners up on three successive occasions to Barry Town, Abergavenny and Haverfordwest, prior to entry into the National League, which the club supported from the outset. the 92/93 season saw the club narrowly miss out on European football ending up in 3rd position behind Cwmbran and Inter Cardiff. If only they'd had the INTER-TOTO Cup back then! This was followed by 10th, 17th and 15th positions. This year Manager Meirion Appleton has pinned his faith in the outstanding crop of youngsters in the area, making sure that Aber are one of the youngest, and therefore least experienced, teams in the league.

However, despite Aber's recent inability to challenge at the top (do not fear, this will not last long!) we remain one of the best supported clubs in the league, averaging over 300 on our home gate, not bad, considering we haven't been in the top half of the table for four seasons!

So there you have it, a potted history of Aber Town, you may now all go away happy in the knowledge that you will never have to read this again! UNTIL NEXT TIME!
