NOTE: For the first time in the history of the Umbro/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Winter rankings, one high school finished first in both the boys and the girls poll. St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, won state championships in 1996-97 with both the boys and girls high school soccer teams en route to a first place ranking in each of the Final Umbro/NSCAA Winter boys and girls High School Rankings. The boys team ended the year with a 29-0-1 record, while the girls team posted a 32-0-0 slate.
