MeMy Club PageStephanie

Okay, this is my page with a list of some clubs for all of you who like the club scene. I am not a huge clubber, but I do go out at least once a week to clubs in Scottsdale, Tempe, and Phoenix. I have had a few people contact me through ICQ from other states who were coming to visit AZ and wanted to know of some of the hot spots here in AZ. So I decided to dedicate a page in my site to clubbing. These clubs are listed in no particular order.

1. Buzz Funbar - This place is pretty small, but it is cute and the dance floor gets packed. The decor is somewhat like a safari, with a zebra striped dance floor, wall, and a huge rhinocerous type animal that comes out of the wall. It has plenty of strobe lights, colored flashy lights, and smoke to keep things lively. I like that there is a little "stage" area where you can dance and look out on the dance floor. You can get out of the crowd and show off at the same time. Upstairs is a bar that overlooks the dance floor as well and scattered throughout the club are comfy couches to rest on. The music is usually pretty good, ranging from hip-hop, rap, to some techno. I give the Buzz a pretty high rating, since I normally have a pretty good time there. Location is in north Scottsdale at Scottsdale Rd. &  Shea Rd.

2. Club Rio - This place is pretty big. The dance floor is huge but it still gets packed. They also have a huge stage to dance on as well as some pedastals at the corners of the dance floor to dance on. There is a large patio outside here as well, and there is usually live music playing there during the week. As far as lighting, they have the same thing as Buzz, but I never notice it as much probably because it is bigger inside. They have certain types of music playing on different nights, but it is largely hip-hop, retro, and some techno on the nights I have been there. Wednesday nights is House Party night, where 18 and over crowds can get on T.V. because everything is videotaped for a public access show that airs late on Friday nights. Visit the web site http://www.clubrio.com for more info. Location is in Tempe, at Scottsdale Rd. and Loop 202.

3. Cajun House - I don't usually frequent Cajun House, but I have been there a few times. It is a pretty cool place. Big like Club Rio, but I think the atmosphere is more interesting. I can't remember the type of music they play there, probably the usual hip-hop type dance music. It too has live music performances regularly. Location is in Scottsdale.

4. Axis/Radius - This is two bars combined. One side, Radius, is the more upbeat, wild lights and smoke, techno and hip-hop music side. The other is Axis, which is a bit more retro and less "clubby" without the flashy lights. I usually only hang out at Radius, because I love the lights and smoke. The dance floor is pretty small, but it does the job and if you don't dance you can watch the dancers that are hired to dance up on the podium high above the dance floor. They throw out free glow sticks to the crowd and everyone gets crazy. Location is in Scottsdale.

5. Insomnia - I think I like this one just for the name. No, really, it is all dance at this place. Two different rooms play different types of music. One is geared toward heavy house/techno music and the other is more hip-hop type music. It is very big, with minimal furniture and bean bag chairs piled all over to rest on. This place is an after hours club, open from 12-4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights so it is truly for the people who want to party hard. They don't serve alcohol here, but it is still limited to 21 and over. Oh yeah, and this place has glow sticks galore. If you like flashy, blinky things go there. As for what to wear, you might want to get a little wild, because people will be wearing a lot of shiny clothes. Basically, anything goes. It is also located in Scottsdale, around the corner from Axis/Radius.

6. Sanctuary - Another techno place. I haven't been there yet, but I have heard it is better than Insomnia and Radius. It is a little bit more upper class in the dress code and I hear it is a fun place to party also. Location is right near Insomnia in Scottsdale.

7. Pompeii - Okay, I have been here several times, but I hear mixed reactions in others' opinions of the place. In my opinion, the music is great because they play techno, but some others don't like it. My sister went on a Thursday night for 18 and over night and she said the music was so bad she left early. But on Friday and Saturday nights it is cool. They are open after hours as well as regular hours. Only from 1-4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights it is open to 18 and over. This place gets really crowded after hours. The music is usually pumping pretty good and the lit up dance floor is too packed to move. The dance floor is downstairs and you can look over the balcony and watch everything that is going on down there. This is another popular spot for glow sticks, since the raver crowd shows up here after hours. Location is in Tempe at Rural Rd. and Apache Rd.

8. Club 411 - I went there once and I hated it. The music was bad, it was filled with smoke, and the guys there kept groping me. I didn't like it. But then again I went with my sister on Sunday night, which is 18 and over night. That might explain the young, immature crowd. Other than that is wasn't too bad. The dance floor was big and there is a center stage thing you can dance on if you want to show off. This was another glow stick place. The night I went they did play some techno, but it was mainly hip-hop and towards the end of the evening they played some 80's music. Anyway, if you're 18 and over, it is might be one of your only options on a Sunday night. Location is in Tempe, at 411 Mill Ave. UPDATE: 411 was bought and rennovated and now it is a different club. I haven't checked it out yet and I don't know what the new name is.

9. Have a Nice Day Cafe - If you like 60's, 70's, and 80's music, go here. I went on a Friday night and had a good time dancing, but after a while the retro music got a little old and I was wanting to hear some newer music. The decor was cute. Little happy faces were all over the place and anything that has to do with the 70's and 80's decorates the walls. There were pics of John Travolta all over and Madonna, etc. Oh yeah, and practically everything glows in there because there are so many black lights. Location is in Tempe.

10. New World Bar - I went there once. It was cool and they played good music. Not really a great place if you're into lights and smoke, because it was pretty dark in there. Still, it was a nice place and I brought my glow sticks in there and they showed up well on the dim dance floor. Location is in Downtown Phoenix.

11. Crow Bar - I went there once when it was open next to The New
World Bar. They are next door to each other and after hours they
opened up a door between the two so you could visit either bar. It was cool and they played good music and had special lighting effects. One
warning ... it is a gay bar. There were men all over the place who were
shirtless and dancing and kissing. At first I was really weirded out by
it, but after a couple of them told me how beautiful I looked, I started
to get used to them. Location is in Downtown Phoenix right next to
the New World Bar.
