The Sterling Chex Mix Quartet (or simply the Chex Mix Quartet) is a four person brass ensemble and, as noted by the "sterling" in our name) each instrument is plated in silver. We are (in order of voicing): Craig Berman on first trumpet, Johann Hukari on second trumpet, Matt Schrader on euphonium, and PJ Shaver on tuba. But back to the history:
We started during a marching band rehearsal during the summer of 1996. Originally we had a trombone in the place of our euphonium but we decided he was on crack and was replaced (hi Jeff). We were originally were just messing around and a tune appeared and our style was born: the ditty. Yes, we create and perform our own ditties (short quasi-songs). We have perfected the art form of the ditty.
We have performed
in numerous places. Our most regular appearances have
been
our post game shows at home football games. We have also performed for
the opening of businesses, festivals, and other occasions where our music
has been requested. Don't just think that all we play is ditties, although
that is what we do best. Our repertoire has been increased by such notable
composers as Mozart, Wagner, and Stravinsky.
OK, maybe not. But we can also play many things (we're all members of honors groups) and we occasionally write down our music. We have had two works written specifically for us (the first being "The Yellow Shellfish" by trumpet Johann Hukari and tuba PJ Shaver, "The Macerena" arranged by Matt Schrader, and "Jolly Ditty" playing now, by euphonium Matt Schrader.
It should be noted that the Sterling Chex Mix Quartet does "mar bitvas" (can you say "inside joke"?).
