Welcome to the Naval Medical Center San Diego, the "Pride of Navy Medicine." Naval medical activities began here at Balboa Park in 1914 as a field hospital for Marines on North Island, Coronado. Today's existing facilities are a mix of new and old. The average in-patient census is 300 daily with an expanded capacity for 1134 patients. In an average day here at Balboa, 2000 out-patient clinic patients are seen, 200 Emergency Department visits occur, 60 Same-Day Surgery patients pass through the operating room, 6000 pharmacy prescriptions are filled, 800 X-rays performed, and 50,000 lab procedures ordered. Obstetrics contribute 300+ births each month. An eligible beneficiary population of 500,000 include families of servicemen from area commands and ships, excluding the Tricare population from all services. Staffing includes 3000+ military and 1200 civilian personnel.
