an out of state Tribal chief means nothing, there are Hurons here in Michigan ask them. Originally, more than a dozen of the Iroquoian-speaking tribes in southern Ontario referred to themselves collectively as Wendat meaning "island people " or "dwellers on a penins la." Rendered variously as: Guyandot, Guyandotte, Ouendat, Wyandot, and Wyandotte. The French, however, called the members of a four-tribe confederacy the Huron, a derogatory name derived from their word "hure" meaning rough or ruffian. This has persisted as their usual name in Canada. When they were living in Ohio after 1701, French and Canadians continued to use Huron, but the English and Americans referred to them as Wyandot. Currently, most groups prefer Wyandot rather than Huron. I am so happy to see that there are alumni who are still fighting for tradition in being a HURON and proud to be a graduate of EMU. I came back for a homecoming game a year before last and couldn't except the changes. Singing the fight song, without it starting....Hurons, Hurons, Hat's off to you... seeing the band without the Huron warrior leading it. My heart was not the same. Students at Central, where I now work, ask me what is going on when they see EMU fans wearing Huron items and others wearing that other "thing" at EMU/CMU games up here. I tell them that they need to learn from history and not let it happen on their camp s. Traditions are very special and not to be taken lightly. I still am proud of being a Huron....till the day I die! Fight on Huron supporters!!!!!! Steve....Class of '74

Keep up the good work and never give up! Maybe now that PC Shelton is gone some sense will prevail. I entered EMU in '90 and was there the last year we were the Hurons. It's a distinctive name and in no way an insult, any more than Huron River, etc. Eagle just sucks, and is possibly the most hackneyed nickname in college sports. Go Hurons!
